In a professional boxing career that has stretched for over 13 years, only one person has been able to deny Alexander Povetkin victory. The Russian has an Olympic gold medal as well as other continental and world medals to his name. While this dates back to his day as an amateur fighter, he has also achieved considerable success as a pro, holding the WBA (Regular) heavyweight title for a few years.

Age, Early Life, and Rise to Fame

Povetkin was born Alexander Vladimirovich Povetkin on the 2nd of September 1979 in Kursk, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. From a very young age, Povetkin was said to have shown great strength and athleticism that kept him head and shoulders above his peers at school. His father, who was a boxer, took notice of this and enrolled him into a local boxing gym where he began to learn how to box, as well as other fighting styles such as wushu, karate, and kickboxing.

By the time the Soviet Union had collapsed, Povetkin began to focus on kickboxing, winning numerous regional titles before moving on to compete on the national and international stage. He won a number of amateur kickboxing titles, including the 1997 World Junior Championships, the 1999 W.A.K.O. World Championships, and the 2000 European professional kickboxing title before he decided to focus solely on boxing.

At just 21, Alexander Povetkin enlisted for the 2000 Russian Championships, his first ever major boxing tournament which he went on to win. Other tournaments he won during this period include the 2001 Good Will Games in Australia, the 2002 European Championships, the 2003 XII World Championships, the 2004 European Championship, and then the 2004 Athens Olympic Games after which he decided to turn professional. Povetkin managed a very impressive amateur record of 125-7. He also notably managed to avenge all his seven losses.

Alexander Povetkin’s Pro Boxing Career

Alexander Povetkin made his professional fighting debut on the 11th of June, 2005. He announced himself to the boxing world by recording a second-round technical knockout against German boxer, Muhammad Ali Durmaz. He had four more fights that year which he won by KO’s apart from one that came via decision. Povetkin did not do his reputation any harm in 2006 as he took his professional record to 10-0, with all but one of the fights being KO’s.

The Russian kicked off his third year as a pro with KO victories over American David Bostice and Canadian Patrice L’Heureux. His third fight of 2007 was considered to be his greatest test so far as he was slated to fight American Larry Donald who had beaten former undisputed heavyweight champion, Evander Holyfield. Despite what the fight might have looked like on paper for the Russian fighter, it was business as usual although his victory this time came through a unanimous decision. He managed nine more wins against fighters like Taurus Sykes, Jason Estrada, and Javier Mora before he got the chance to contest for the vacant WBA (Regular) heavyweight title against Uzbekistani fighter Ruslan Chagaev. Povetkin beat his opponent by unanimous decision.

Alexander Povetkin managed to retain his title four times before coming up against IBF, WBO, IBO, The Ring, and lineal heavyweight champion, who gave him his first professional career loss through a unanimous decision on the 5th of October 2013. After that match, Povetkin took a six-month break from the game before returning to win the vacant WBC international heavyweight title after knocking out Manuel Charr. A few months later, he added the WBC Silver heavyweight title to his collection by knocking out French-Cameroonian fighter, Carlos Takam.

Since the Takam fight, Povetkin has won the WBA Continental, WBO International, and WBA Inter-Continental heavyweight titles amidst a number of fines and suspensions over doping. Despite that, he has earned himself the mandatory challenger slot to fight the defending WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight champion, .
