He is one of tennis biggest stars and has enough proof to back the claim as you would soon get to discover in this article.

In addition to his numerous achievements on the court, he holds the title of the youngest player in the ATP top 20. Alexander is also the 4th different player to defeat a member of the Big Four, Novak Djokovic in a Masters 1000 final.

Alexander Zverev’s Bio and Age

The offspring of a lion is no less a lion. You would definitely agree by the time you are done perusing this write up. Alexander aka Sascha was born in a household that appreciates the game of tennis, but also of renowned players in the field. His parents, Alexander Sr. and Irina (also a tennis coach) both played tennis and his father competed professionally for the Soviet Union. Their offshoots are now towing their path showing that a strongly marked personality can influence descendants for generations.

The young player, Alexander aka Sascha was born on April 20, 1997, in Hamburg, Germany. His elder brother, Mischa is also a prominent figure in the game. Sascha started playing tennis as soon as his hands could handle a bat at the age of 5 and saw as his role model in the game. He is right-handed (two-handed backhand).

His family moved to Germany in 1991. He was coached by his father while his physical trainer has been Jez Green since 2013. He trains in Hamburg and Saddlebrook, Florida and resides primarily in Monte Carlo. Alexander does not only limit his interest to tennis but is an ardent fan of basketball which he plays as a hobby. He is also good with languages and can speak German, Russian and English fluently.

In the course of his junior career, he competed in a number of championships and also made it to the top list. He reached the final of the 2013 French Open juniors, the semifinals of the 2013 Junior US Open and eventually won at the 2014 Junior Australian Open as the top seed where he defeated Stefan Kozlov in the final. He won the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Junior World Champion award in 2013. Alexander Zverev was ranked the No.1 boys junior player between October 2013 and June 2014.

He turned pro in 2013.

Professional Career

In 2014, he achieved great success and recorded some career titles as well as received wildcards: one for the Bavarian International Tennis Championships and another for the Stuttgart Open. He defeated three players ranked within the top 100 to win his first ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour title. The victory made him the youngest player at 17 years and 2 months to win a Challenger tournament since Bernard Tomic won the Maccabi Men’s Challenger in 2009.

Right on the trail of his first Tour title, Alexander won his first ATP tour-level match at the 2014 International German Open when he beat Robin Haase. The following year, he made further progress in his career, moving into the top 100 with a career-high ATP ranking of No. 85. This was as a result of his winning an ATP Challenger Tour title at Heilbronn in Germany.

In 2015 also, the tennis player made it to the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. This feat qualified him as a top 100 ranked player. He won the ATP Star of Tomorrow Award in 2015 for finishing in the Top 100 as the youngest player. However, he has known defeat in some games but that is normal considering that no success comes easy and any game has its winners and losers. Sascha lost to the Spanish player, Tommy Robredo in the semifinals of 2015 Swedish Open and was defeated by the third seed Marin Čilić in two close sets at the 2015 Citi Open.

For the player, every year holds a new title for him and a slew of wins in turn irrespective of the losses he may encounter. In 2016, he played in category ATP 500 in Rotterdam. He could not make it to the final though, as he lost to the French player, Gaël Monfils in the quarterfinal. Prior to the end of the year, he advanced to his first 500 final and second final overall at the French Open after he upset top seed, three-time defending champion, and 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in three sets in the semifinals. Eventually, he lost to resurgent countryman Florian Mayer in three sets. 2016 would see him win his first ATP title which he clinched at the St. Petersburg Open.

In October of the same year, Alexander Zverev entered the ATP top 20 as the youngest player since Novak Djokovic in 2006.

In 2017, he paired with his brother to win the doubles title in Montpellier, beating Fabrice Martin and Daniel Nestor. He also made it to his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal at the Miami Open but lost to the Australian player, Nick Kyrgios in the quarterfinals. One thing about him, however, is that he knows how to maintain his excellent form, relaunching after every loss with a stronger will to win. Having made it to the Masters 1000, he set up his first Masters 1000 semifinal with John Isner eventually trumping Djokovic in the finals to score his first Masters title. Being accustomed to reaching milestones in his youth, Alexander became the youngest player since Djokovic in 2007 to win a Masters 1000 title, and the first player born in the 1990s to do so. Amazing, right?

As if the Masters 1000 was not enough, Sascha won his first ATP World Tour 500 event at the Washington Open. The highlights of his career in 2017 include scoring his second consecutive career Masters title after he beat his childhood idol, the Swiss player Roger Federer, rising to world No. 4 in ATP Tour ranking, thus breaking into the top-5 for the first time in his career.

In 2018, the right-handed athlete made his third ATP World Tour Masters 1000 final at the Miami Masters, was seeded second at Masters 1000 event for the first time and became only the fifth active player to have won at least three Masters titles, the others being the four members of the Big Four (Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, , and Andy Murray). He also became the 7th player in the Open Era to reach their 5th Masters 1000 Final before turning 22.

Sascha has won a total of 8 career titles and is currently ranked World No. 3.

In 2017, he beat world No. 1, Andy Murray in four sets before he eventually lost to Roger Federer in the quarterfinals. He has also reached the quarterfinals of both 2009 Italian Open and the 2016 Shanghai Masters.
