She was born in Bombay, Maharashtra, India on the 15th of March 1993. Her parents are Mahesh Bhatt who is a filmmaker/director and Soni Razdan who is an actress. She has two half brothers and one elder sister. Alia Bhatt attended Jamnabai Narsee School, Mumbai and started her acting career in 1999 when she featured as the younger version of Preity Zinta in Sangharsh.

Her first role as an adult was in Student of the Year (2012) where she acted alongside debutantes actors like Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. Alia Bhatt features as Sehmat Khan in this spy thriller movie. The movie is an adaptation of the novel – Calling Sehmat by Harinder Sikka. It recounts the experience of an agent in the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) who had to marry into a family with military officials to spy and inform India before the Indian and Pakistan war of 1971.

Alia received lots of positive reviews and praise for her performance and won a total of eight awards from 10 nominations mostly for the ‘Best Actress’ category. They include NBT Utsav 2017 Awards, Screen Awards, Zee Cine Awards, Filmfare Awards, Critic Choice Film Award 2019 to mention a few. The movie which has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes made $30 million against a budget of over $5 million in the Box Office.

2. Gully Boy (2019)

Alia Bhatt plays the role of Safeena Firdausi in this musical drama which became a critical and box office success. The movie is a bildungsroman about a street rapper. While the movie hasn’t seen much in terms of award, critics have given it lots of praise and positive reviews. It also has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing $36.55 million worldwide against a $9.6 million budget it is clearly a commercial success in the box office.

3. Udta Punjab (2016)

This is one of Alia Bhatt’s movies that fall in the comedy/crime genre. The Indian film is based on drug abuse by youths in Punjab and the several conspiracies around it. Alia’s role as Bauria (Mary Jane) has been described as a departure from her previous light-hearted roles. In preparation for her role, she watched various documentaries on drug abuse and also had to learn to speak the Bihari dialect.

Her performance received critical praise with critics describing it as her best performance till that point and she won a total of 6 awards for her brilliance. The movie grossed $16.6 million in the Box Office and has a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

4. Kapoor & Sons (2016)

The family drama highlights the story of 2 brothers who are estranged but had to return home when their grandfather suffers a cardiac arrest. Alia features as a love interest for one of the brothers. It has a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It has been well-received both critically and in the box office earning a total of $23 million against a budget of $5.2 million. The movie won five awards and Alia received positive reviews about her role as Tia Malik.

5. Highway (2014)

The movie tells the story of a girl who experiences freedom after being kidnapped. Alia Bhatt takes up the main role of Veera Tripathi in the movie. Her performance has been described as raw, uninhibited and that of a natural performer who mesmerizes through her role. For her performance, she was named one of the most promising emerging Hindi film actors. With a 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie also a did well in the box office making $6.7 million against a budget of $3.6 million.

6. Dear Zindagi (2016)

Alia Bhatt takes the lead role in this coming of age film. Her character – Kaira meets a psychologist who assists her in gaining new insights and perspective in her life. As usual, she gives an outstanding performance which earned her a total of seven nominations, among them are Filmfare Award for Best Actress, Zee Cine Awards, International Indian Film Academy Awards.

7. Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017)

Alia Bhatt takes the lead alongside Varun Dhawan in this romantic comedy. There were lots of positive comments about their on-screen chemistry. The movie received a total of 33 prestigious nominations winning 7. Alia also wins 2 ‘Best Actor’ award for her performance. The movie grossed more than four times its budget on the box office and has a 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

8. Student of the Year (2012)

This was Alia’s first movie. She debuted as Shanaya Singhania alongside Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra in the coming of age story where she falls in love with another man despite having a boyfriend. While critics were skeptical about the reception due to the absence of popular stars, the movie surprisingly did well at the box office in the first week. It became the biggest non-star cast opener ever in Bollywood until the record was surpassed.

It grossed a total of $10 million in the box office after a four weeks run closing at $14 million. The movie earned several nominations and awards with Alia winning a ‘Lions Gold Award for Favourite Debut Female’ amongst several nominations. It has an average score of 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.

9. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014)

Alia Bhatt’s movies include a handful of romance and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is among them. It is Alia Bhatt’s second pairing with Varun Dhawan after the success of Student of the Year. The movie is about a spoilt rich girl who is on the verge of marriage but falls in love with another person in her quest to buy herself an expensive wedding dress. It emerged a critical and commercial success like its successor. The two lead actors won a Stardust Award for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively.

10. 2 States (2014)

The romantic comedy features Alia as Ananya Swaminathan a brilliant but averaged home student who is rejected by the family of the man who intends to marry her. Scoring 44% on Rotten Tomatoes, the reviews and critics comments about the movie has been mixed. While some believe it to be a good family movie, some have pointed out that the movie was bolstered by talented actors and that the story is the weakest link.

11. Kalank (2019)

Alia Bhatt features as Roop in the Hindi period drama. Despite the array of star cast, the movie was a flop in the box office. It had some positive reviews by critics which were basically for the music/opera. It also has a score of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes.

12. Shaandaar (2015)

The romantic comedy features Alia Bhatt alongside Shahid Kapoor in the lead role. While the movie barely broke even in the box office grossing $10.8 million against a budget of $9.8 million. It has a paltry score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes and critics review has been generally negative with some describing it as sloppy, badly written story, bizarre and very inconsistent.
