Early Years and Career
The actress was born on the 28th of June 1954, in Upington Cape Province South Africa with the full name Alice Maud Krige. Her father, Louis Krige, was a physician while her mother, Patricia Krige, was a clinical psychologist professor. She grew up in Port Elizabeth alongside her two brothers.
Alice’s parents were relatively successful in their various fields and that guaranteed her and her brothers a comfortable life. Her brothers followed in their father’s steps, becoming medical professionals- one was a physician and the other, a professor of surgery. Having been inspired by her mother’s profession, Alice enrolled at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa with the intention of getting a degree in clinical psychology and literature.
However, fate had other plans for her as she took a liking to the performing arts after attending an acting class for extra credit at the university. She eventually concluded her studies in 1975, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a BA Hons degree in Drama, with distinction.
Years later, in 2004 to be precise, Rhodes University honored her with an Honorary doctorate degree in Literature. Prior to this, she moved to England after her graduation from the university and enrolled in London Central School of Speech and Drama where she studied Drama for 3 years.
In 1979, Alice made her professional acting debut in BBC’s Play for Today. The following year, she played the role of Lucie Manette in the T.V adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities which aired on British television.
In 1981, she went on to feature in the Academy Award-winning movie, Chariots of Fire, and in Ghost Story, playing the role of Sybil Gordon and Eva Galli/Alma Mobley respectively. Also in the same year, she starred in a theatre production of George Bernard Shaw’s play, Arms and the Man, and earned two awards – Plays and Players Award and Laurence Olivier Award for her outstanding performance in the stage show.
She made several other appearances on stage plays, even joining the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1982 to 1983 and appeared in plays like The Tempest, King Leah, Cyrano de Bergerac and Taming of the Shrew, amongst others.
Alice Krige made her way back to film and television shortly after leaving the Royal Shakespeare Company. She featured in several films and television series, including King David (1985), Baja Oklahoma (1988), Ellis Island (1984), Ladykiller (1992), Scarlet and Black (1993) and Sleepwalkers, to mention just a few.
In 2012, she produced and appeared in the award-winning feature film, Jail Caesar, which explores the very little information known about Julius Caesar when he was an adolescent.
The actress was a member of the ensemble team for the American movie, Thor, in 2013. She was honored in 2015 with an award in Jakarta during the International Film Festival for Peace, Inspiration, and Equality, for her excellent performance in the movie, Shingetsu.

The Saturn Award winner married her heartthrob Paul Schoolman, a British film director and writer, in 1988. He was born on August 22nd 1947, in London and is famous for writing and directing the 2012 hit film Jail Caesar which featured his wife, Alice, amongst its cast. The movie won him two awards at the Asia Pacific
International Filmmaker festival and the Berlin Independent film festival respectively.
Paul and Alice have been married for 30 years and they are currently based in the U.S. The couple does not have any children that we know of.
