Alshon Jeffery Bio

The wide receiver was born as Alshon Jemmel Jeffery on 14 February 1990 in his hometown, St. Matthews, South Carolina. He is an American by nationality and belongs to the African-American ethnicity. His parents are Charles Jeffery Sr. and Deloris Jeffery. He graduated from Calhoun County High School in his hometown. During his high school days, he was on the basketball team which won the state championship four times setting an 84-1 record.

Apart from basketball, he also played football for two years and was widely recruited. He gave a verbal commitment to the University of Southern California but would later switch his commitment to the University of South Calorina. His family is an athletic one which has the boys playing actively on their school team and beyond. He has two older brothers (Charles Ben and Darren Ben) who also played basketball and football for their high school team. Their younger brother, Shamier, committed to play football for the Gamecocksin 2011.

Career

Jeffery played college football for three seasons from 2009 to 2011. As a freshman, his performance against the University of Kentucky was the second-best single-game performance in school history which made him the third Gamecock in 2009 to earn SEC Freshman of the Week. In the game, he made seven catches for 138 yards and three touchdowns. He had a successful freshman season and was acknowledged as a consensus first-team Freshman All-SEC and first-team Freshman All-American.

During his sophomore season, he was named a finalist of Biletnikoff Award, the award given to the nation’s top wide receiver. He was also selected as an All-American as a result of his performances in helping lead the Gamecocks to their first SEC Championship Game appearance in school history. His outstanding records include a few yards shy of 200 receiving yards and added two touchdowns for the Gamecocks. Through 14 games, he made 88 catches totalling 1,517 yards and nine touchdowns including eight games with more than 100 yards more receiving, and a 108.4 yard/game average.

His third season in 2011 saw him named by ESPN as the best overall player in the SEC. He was named the Capital One Bowl MVP despite his ejection in the third quarter of the 2012 Capital One Bowl for fighting Alfonzo Dennard, a Nebraska player cornerback.

Continued Success In Chicago Bears

He was selected by the Chicago Bears in the second run of the 2012 NFL Draft as the 45th overall pick. Jeffery became the first player in the 2012 draft class to sign after he agreed to a four-year contract with the Bears. He made his debut in the week one preseason against the Denver Broncos. Although the Bears lost 31-3, he caught a game-high four passes for 35 yards. Jeffery ended his rookie season catching 24 passes for 367 yards and three touchdowns notwithstanding the number of penalties he garnered in the season.

The 2013 season with the Bears came with a lot of fortunes for the wide receiver. He recorded his first career 100-yard receiving and broke the Bears’ single-game receiving yards record with 218 yards, as well as recording a career-high 10 receptions. Jeffery also became the first player in franchise history to record two 200-yard games in the same season. He ended the 2013 season with 89 receptions for 1,421 yards and seven touchdowns. Jeffery was named to the 2014 Pro Bowl and the Pro Football Writers Association’s Most Improved Player on January 17, 2014.

No season has passed without him making new marks and securing a place in the heart of his numerous fans. In his third season in NFL, he recorded more than 1,000 yards for the second time in his career with 1,133 yards with 85 receptions for 10 touchdowns on 145 targets. In 2015, he ended the season with 54 receptions for 807 yards and four touchdowns on 93 targets.

2016 heralded the Bears placing the franchise tag on Alshon Jeffery on February 26. His career with the Bears was wrapped up with him amassing 4,549 receiving yards and 304 receptions. Worthy of note is that he possessed the third most receiving yards in Bears franchise history.

Move To Philadelphia Eagles

He signed a one-year, $14 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on March 9, 2017. With that, he made his debut in the season opener against the Washington Redskins on September 10, 2017. With his new team, he has gone ahead to replicate his success but not without making a clear distinction by reaching for the best. His time with the Eagles was extended on December 2, 2017, when he signed a four-year extension worth $52 million with $27 million guaranteed.
