Andrei Arlovski Biography

Andrei Valeryevich Arlovski was born in Babruysk, Belarus on February 4, 1979, and grew up with a strong desire to defend himself. His experiences in the hands of bullies who often picked on him and beat him up at a young age motivated him toward weightlifting in hope of packing up muscles to defend himself. At age 16, Arlovski began engaging in martial arts sports such as Judo, Sambo and Kickboxing.

He enrolled in the police academy in Minsk, while pursuing his career interest in law enforcement, he participated actively in martial arts and taking up the required police defense course in Sambo. By 1999, with his competence in the combat sport, he earned a number of accolades including two silver medals at the Sambo World Cup and at the World Sambo Championship.

Andrei Arlovski also won the World Youth Championship and the  European Youth Sambo Championship and capped it all with the title as the first Master of Sports and then International Master of Sports. He developed more interest in other martial arts, studying kickboxing and perfecting his striking skills.

Professional Career

Andrei Arlovski commenced his professional MMA career in Russia when he fought at the Mix Fight M-1 in St Petersburg on April 9, 1999, at age 20. He lost his first fight but persisted in 2000 to M-1 Global at the European Championships where he had a taste of his first victory, after winning a heavyweight crown with a KO victory and a submission victory.

On his debut at UFC 28, Arlovski defeated his opponent by submission. His rise to UFC elite following his victory fight with the former heavyweight champion, Tim Sylvia earned Arlovski the new UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion, on February 5, 2005. He defended the title twice on June 4, 2005, at UFC 53; and on October 2005, at UFC 55, to be recognized by UFC as the undisputed heavyweight champion. He was defeated during a rubber match with Sylvia on July 8, 2006, at UFC 61, where he sustained significant injury.

Nevertheless, the Belarusian fighter won his subsequent fight at UFC 70 against Fabrício Werdum, a two-time world Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion.

In his final appearance at the octagon after 11 months of inactivity, Arlovski defeated Jake O’Brien by TKO in what would be the latter’s first ever MMA loss. The Pit Bull as he is nicknamed left the UFC with a record of 10–4, including going 3–2 in title fights.

Arlovski signed with the newly created MMA-promotion Affliction Entertainment and continued his bouts of victory. From 2006-2008, he won five fights at UFC 66 – Liddell vs. Ortiz 2; UFC 70 – Nations Collide; UFC 82 – Pride of a Champion; Affliction – Banned; and EliteXC – Heat.

His days at Strikeforce from 2009-2011 was tailed with series of losses (four consecutive losses) starting from Jan. 24, 2009, at Affliction – Day of Reckoning. However, to gear up his fighting prowess and rebuild his MMA career, Arlovski began training in New Mexico, exclusively with one of his trainers Greg Jackson who encouraged him not yield to the pressure to retire.

After several months of grueling training, The Pit Bull made a come back at ProElite 1 on August 27, in Hawaii against heavyweight Ray Lopez. He dominated his opponent throughout the fight and won by TKO in the third round. His fourth fight with his longtime nemesis, Sylvia at ONE Fighting Championship: Pride of a Nation on August 31, 2012, ended in a no-contest due to an illegal soccer kick (now legal) which would have made Arlovski the winner by TKO.

Arlovski continued to fight from 2012 after signing with the Asia-based promotion ONE Fighting Championship in mid-July 2012. He fought at the World Series of Fighting and on Independent promotions (2012-2015) where he won all 8 fights except at World Series of Fighting 2 on March 23, 2013, against Anthony Johnson.

Upon his return to UFC, Andrei Arlovski engaged in 12 fights (2014-2018); six of which he won, including at UFC 222 against Stefan Struve on March 4, 2018, where he landed a career-best 4 takedowns.
