Angelique Kerber is a German-born professional tennis player and former WTA world No. 1. Having launched her professional career back in 2003, Kerber steadily rose through the ranks eventually shooting into prominence when she reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at the 2011 US Open. However, 2016 was adjudged to be Kerber’s biggest year yet as she claimed her first 2 Grand Slam titles which propelled her to the top of the rankings on September 12, 2016. The highly talented left-hander also clinched a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics where she represented her home country Germany. Biography
Angelique Kerber was born on January 18, 1988, in Bremen, Germany. Her mother Beata (née Rzeźnik) is originally Polish while her father Sławomir Kerber is an ethnic German from Poznań, Poland. She has raised in the northern German city of Kiel, alongside one sibling, a sister named Jessica. Angelique Kerber holds a dual German-Polish citizenship and is able to speak German, Polish and English.
Kerber started playing tennis at a very tender age and her mother served as her manager during her junior career. She progressed to the latter stages of several events both in Germany and all around Europe, however, she didn’t clinch any junior title until 2003, at a time she had already made her professional debut.
Angelique Kerber made her Grand Slam debut in 2007, however, she was met with an early exit at the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. She continued on a steady rise over the following years, winning several ITP titles, however, the WTA titles continued to elude her. 2012 can be described as Kerber’s breakthrough year as she won her first 2 WTA titles; the 2012 Open GDF Suez and the 2012 e-Boks Open. She equally scored her first victory against Serena Williams at the 2012 Western & Southern Open, putting an end to the latter’s 198-match winning streak. However, Kerber eventually lost to Li Na at the final of the tournament.
Angelique Kerber won her 3rd WTA title at the 2013 Generali Ladies Linz tournament. She claimed her 4th and 5th titles in 2015 at the Family Circle Cup and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix events respectively. Kerber also won her 6th career title and her first title on grass at the 2015 Aegon Classic tournament. This was followed up with a 7th title at the 2015 Bank of the West Classic tournament.
2016 was a year of many firsts for Angelique Kerber as she won her first Grand Slam title at her maiden Grand Slam final. Kerber defeated world No. 1 Serena Williams at the 2016 Australian Open to clinch the highly coveted title. Later on in the year, Kerber lost to Williams at the final of the 2016 Wimbledon Championships. However, she successfully claimed her 2nd Grand Slam title at the 2016 US Open after which she reached her first No. 1 ranking in September 2016. Even though Kerber finished 2016 at the summit of the WTA rankings, the German-born tennis star didn’t have a palatable season in 2017.
In 2018, Angelique Kerber advanced to the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the quarter-finals of the French Open losing to then-world No. 1 on both occasions. She equally reached the final of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships where she is billed to square up with a familiar opponent Serena Williams.

Beltz’s first stint as Kerber’s coach began in 2003 when the tennis star turned professional. After a 10-year stint, the duo parted ways in 2013, however, they never confirmed if they were really an item.
After a 2-year separation, Angelique Kerber rehired Torben Beltz as her coach at the start of 2015. This 2nd stint between the duo lasted for 2 years and on November 16, 2017, Kerber announced via social media that her longtime partnership with Torben Beltz has come to an end. At the moment, it may be safe to assume that Angelique Kerber is single.
