Over the years, Hollywood producers have thrilled their audiences with entertaining and brilliant action-packed movies. The GI Joe franchise movies don’t fall far from this tree. This franchise has become the favorite of many action and sci-fi movie lovers around the world. Like the Avengers and X-Men franchise who were based on comics, this film franchise was inspired by the toy franchise of the same name created by Hasbro as well as their comic books with similar titles.
It has been a while since anything new was heard about this franchise, luckily fans are up for a surprise as reports have it that a third sequel in on its way. The first installment in this film series was GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra which was released in 2009. The audience couldn’t get enough, hence the release of a sequel in 2013, G.I Joe: Retaliation. Both films were not the audiences’ or critics’ favorites, but they were commercial successes domestically and globally. The next GI Joe sequel, however, promises to be better. According to Hasbro, the world is changing and so is GI Joe. It is also indicated that they intend to spice things up with a more contemporary approach.
The G.I Joe Franchise
The GI Joe franchise has only released two films presently. The GI Joes are a group of special mission unit operating under the United States Government. As mentioned earlier, the first film was released in 2009, specifically on August 6. Its screenplay was put together by Stuart Beattie, David Elliot, and Paul Lovett and was directed by Stephen Sommers. Its ensemble cast includes , , , , , Ray Park, and Saïd Taghmaoui.
In GI Joe: Rise of Cobra, the transportation of a nanotech-based technology led by two military officers is sabotaged by a group of terrorists. The technology, as well as the soldiers, are rescued by an elite team known as the GI Joes. After being taken to the secret base of the GI Joe’s, the military officers join this secret task force to combat worldwide terrorism perpetuated by Cobra Commander and his vicious team.
The first sequel, known as GI Joe: Retaliation was released on March 28, 2013. This film continued the storyline which began with its predecessor. With the enemies of the world not vanquished, the GI Joes face another threat. In this sequel, the GI Joes are framed by Zartan and the Cobra Commander, hence saddled with the responsibility to come up with a plan to tackle their reinforced enemies.
This film was directed by Jon Chu and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. It retained some of its prequels’ cast members who also reprised their previous roles. They include Byung-hun Lee, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, Arnold Vosloo, and Channing Tatum. Some of the new cast added to the list included , D. J. Cotrona, , , and .
Will There Be Another Sequel? Are GI Joe Movies Still Made?
The answer to this question is, yes. Hasbro, Paramount and other collaborative production companies of this franchise still have more to offer the movie lovers. According to several blogs and news sites, G.I Joe 3 is on its way. In the words of Hasbro Chief Content Officer, Steve Davis, this GI Joe sequel will include a new type of ‘Joe’ that will widen the audience both domestically and internationally. Prior to this most recent announcement by Paramount, a sequel titled GI Joe: Ever Vigilant was being planned, however, it never made it off the ground.
What to Expect?
Majorly, this sequel is a Snake Eyes spin-off, meaning that it will center on Snake Eyes of the GI Joes team. This is, however, still a rumor and hasn’t been confirmed by any authentic sources. This new movie is speculated to be webbed around Phillips “Chuckles” Provost, an inactive undercover agent who learns of a new threat from the terrorist organization, COBRA. He learns that the two evil twins, Tomax and Xamot, working under COBRA have acquired a new device known as the Wheel of Time.
Also, they intend to travel to the future and bring back a weapon that can exterminate the GI Joe’s permanently. With this information, he swings into action by informing his superiors but hits a dead end as they do not trust him and will not look into his findings. Not dissuaded by this setback, he forms his own team, comprising of Helix, Wild Bill, Jinx, and Snake Eyes to fight this refined terrorist uprise.
GI Joe Sequel Cast
Formerly, the cast for this film was meant to include Dwayne Johnson as well as Channing Matthew Tatum, however, recent news indicates that this will no longer be the case. In addition, Paramount Studios are said to have their eyes on some new actors such as , , and . There are also speculations that actor, might be taking up the role of Snake Eyes in this sequel.
Release Date – When Is It Coming Out?
Hasbro has exciting news for all its GI Joe fans. Not only is the GI Joe sequel on its way but in a very short time too. According to Paramount Studios, GI Joe 3 is set for release on October 16, 2020.
