He began his career at Standard Liège, where he made 183 appearances, scored 42 goals, and won five domestic trophies. Witsel made his professional debut in the Jupiler Pro League against FC Brussels on September 17, 2006, replacing Steven Defour in the 89th minute. In the same year, he lost in the Belgian Cup final to FC Brugge with Liège.
