Costil began his football career in 1993 with US Bretteville. He joined SM Caen Academy after two years with the club. He progressed through the junior ranks before making his professional squad debut against Reims in Ligue 2 in 2005-06.

Benoit Costil’s Career

Costil, who was born in Caen, Calvados, began his career in Ligue 1 with Caen but only made 10 appearances before being loaned out to Vannes in Ligue 2 for the 2008–09 season. Sedan signed with Costil from Caen until June 17, 2011. He made 76 appearances for Sedan in two years and was named best goalkeeper in Ligue 2 for the 2010–11 season.

After his contract with Sedan concluded on June 14, 2011, he signed a three-year contract with Rennes. With this move, he returned to Ligue 1 for the first time since a few outings at Caen at the start of his career.

He moved to Bordeaux in 2017. He was chosen as team captain in July 2019 after his contract was extended till 2022. However, after the arrival of Laurent Koscielny, he was demoted to vice-captain.

International Career

Costil was a France U-21 international who competed in the Toulon Tournament in 2008. Costil was included in France manager Didier Deschamps’ 23-man team for friendlies against Albania and Sweden on November 6, 2014. Costil was included in France manager Didier Deschamps’ 23-man squad for UEFA Euro 2016 as the third goalkeeper behind captain Hugo Lloris and Steve Mandanda on May 12, 2016. His team earned the silver medal in the competition after defeating Portugal 0-1 in the final game, although he did not compete.

He made his debut against Ivory Coast on November 15, playing the entire game and captaining his team in a 0–0 home draw. The first clean sheet was kept by him. He was included in a preliminary 35-man French team for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia with Anthony Martial on May 17, 2018, but did not make the final 23.

Following the injury to Steve Mandanda, Deschamps called on Costil to join the national squad for UEFA Nations League matches against Germany and the Netherlands in September 2018. He won the UEFA Nations League with his national side in October 2021.
