Contrariwise, Birgitte Hjort Sørensen is not like the casual musical lover, she was inspired to do what we know her for today after watching the American musical – Chicago while in school.
Birgitte is today a recognized Danish actress world over with several notable works in films, television, and stage plays to her credit. The actress came to prominence with her role in Borgen (2010–2013), a Danish television fictional political drama where she played the role of journalist Katrine Fønsmark. Birgitte Hjort Sørensen is Danish, she was born in Hillerød (center of North Zealand, north of Copenhagen, Denmark) on 16 January 1982 to parents; Christian Hjort Sørensen (father) and Kirsten Damgaard Pedersen (mother) who are both doctors. Her parents later relocated to Birkerød where she spent the rest of her childhood growing up with her two elder sisters.
For school, the Danish actress was enrolled at Bistrup School in Birkerød and later Øregård Gymnasium in Hellerup where she was the editor of the school magazine and student council chairperson. During one of her school trips to London, Birgitte saw the West End musical production of Chicago which she fell in love with and began nursing an ambition to be an actress.
Further to this, she identified as a member of a mini-musical school group organized by the Gladsaxe Theatre which afforded her the opportunity to train in musical theatre for 6 months. She furthered her acting training at the Danish National School of Performing Arts and prior to her graduation, she made her screen debut on the 2005 television series titled The Eagle. Next came her role as Nanna in the 2006 film Tre Somre which was a short Danish film. Her other film credits at the beginning of her career were Canoe, Crush (as Lotte) both in 2007, The Funeral (as Daisy), Anja & Viktor – I medgang og modgang (as Regitze), The Candidate (as Sarah), Alliancen (Sofie) all in 2008 and Ved verdens ende where she played the character of Beate in the 2009 film.
Birgitte Hjort Sørensen struck gold in the Danish film industry when she starred as journalist (Katrine Fønsmark) in the commercially successful fictional political drama series Borgen which she invested time in, training to blend perfectly into the character. The television series ran from 2010-2013 and had 30 episodes in all. For her spectacular performance in the series, she got nominated for the Robert Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Television).
Following the success of Borgen and the broader exposure it gave to her acting prowess, Birgitte began getting roles for movies and television series as often as she was available to take them. Some of her notable film works then included Love Is in the Air (2011) as the character Camilla, 2014 Spanish-Bulgarian sci-fi titled Autómata where she starred alongside , Melanie Griffith, Robert Forster and many others as the character Rachel Vaucan. Sørensen’s recent film credits include Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) as Kommissar, 3 Things (2017) as Camilla and a couple of other works.
On television, she has done notable works like BBC 3 Bluestone 42 (2013) as Astrid in the first series, episode 3, HBO’s Game of Thrones (2015) where she portrayed the character of Karsi in episode “Hardhome” and her latest starring in Greyzone (2018) as Victoria Rahbek in the TV2 television series.
Though we have come to know Birgitte Hjort Sørensen as a film and television actress, the Danish celebrity has not completely abandoned her stage acting roots. She has over the years featured in a couple of stage works like Mød mig på Cassiopeia (2007) at the Nørrebros Theater, Coriolanus (2013–2014) at the Donmar Warehouse and of course Les Liaisons Dangereuses (2016-2017) which showed at the Booth Theatre.
