Career

A Look At Cael Sanderson’s Pre-Penn State Career

Cael Sanderson’s career story can be divided into two: his career before joining Pennsylvania State University and his career with them as their wrestling coach. Before Penn State, Cael had three successful seasons with Iowa State University wrestling team – the Cyclones – as their coach. His career there began as a special assistant coach in the 2004/2005 season before he was promoted to be in charge of the team. For the three seasons he was the head coach of the Cyclones, he led them to the National Championships twice (in the 2007/2008 and 2009/2010 season)  with second and third finishes in the table respectively. He only fell short in the 2008/2009 season with a fifth-place finish and thus, losing out on qualification to the national championships. But in the two which they qualified, they won the national titles. His dual record for the three seasons were 13-3, 16-4 and 15-3 respectively while the Cyclones won the Big 12 Championship consecutively for those three seasons. They also received 15 All-American awards and not one of all his thirty wrestlers failed to qualify for the championships.

Career at Penn State

After three stellar seasons with the Iowa State wrestling team, Cael Sanderson was unveiled as the new wrestling head coach of the Penn State Unversity wrestling team on April 17, 2009. Upon assuming the position, Cael continued his magnificent record only that it got even better. The Nittany Lions, as the wrestling team from the Penn State is called, has won five National championships and Big 10 titles. His impact on the team was so immediate. The season before he came on board (2009/2010 season), the Nittany Lions had a dual record of 8-12-2 and were out of the top 10 teams in the national rankings but they ended with a record of 13-6-1 and a ninth-place finish in the 2010/2011 season.

He has been nine seasons so far and his magic touch has been in full glare. The Nittany Lions (under Cael Sanderson) has been a better side, winning 7 team titles in his nine years at the helm. Their other achievements under him includes – All-Americans award (51), National Champions (20), Southern Scuffle titles (7 consecutively), Big Ten Championships (5), NCAA Championships (7), B1G dual meet titles (5), Gorriaran winners (4), Hodge Trophy Winners (3), NCAA Tournament Outstanding Wrestlers (3), CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year (1), NCAA Elite 89 winner (1) and NCAA Top 10 Award winner (1).
