Cameron Brate is a football tight end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL; he played college football at Harvard. The Harvard graduate would have comfortably nurtured a career in finance but his love for football compelled him to chase after his NFL dreams.

Cameron Brate Bio

Cameron Brate was born on July 3, 1991, to Phil and Patricia who were both teachers, in Naperville, Illinois where he had his high school education. As a high school student at Naperville Central High School, Brate lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He got cut from his Freshman football A team due to his small size but became a starter in the B team. Brate excelled both in sports and in his academics and won many accolades and recognition for his outstanding performances in both areas. He was named to All-City, All-Dupage Valley Conference first team, all-area selection, as well as in Chicago Tribune All-State Special Mention. Brate was also a two-time academic All-state pick and Academic all-conference in football and basketball.

During his junior year in high school, Brate received a letter from Harvard University. Beyond the thought of a Midwestern kid who never dreamt he would get to study in a place like that, this chap eventually found himself in Harvard. He played on the junior varsity team in 2010 and spent the next three seasons on the Crimson varsity squad. Cameron Brate finished his collegiate career with 91 receptions for 1,381 yards and 18 touchdowns which ranked him fourth in the school history. Among other attainments, he was twice named in first-team All-Ivy League.

Brate graduated in May 2014 with a degree in Economics and was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy. The trophy which is regarded as the “Academic Heisman” is the highest academic award in the country presented to a senior football player in recognition of his academic success, football performance, and exemplary community leadership.

Following his graduation, he would no doubt have excelled in finance if he had pursued a career therein. He expressed interest in the finance field as he completed an internship with a hedge fund in Boston; however, he later opted for a career in the NFL. It is most likely that this bloke would get involved with finance again after his football career.

For someone who graduated from an Ivy League school, one would imagine his future was well planned out, that wasn’t the case for Brate. He went undrafted in the 2014 draft but was eventually invited by the Buccaneers to a rookie tryout. Brate got signed after the tryout though his stay hasn’t been without its ups and downs. First, the team released him during the final cuts, then he signed with the New Orleans Saints the next day after his release and was even placed on their practice squad.

After being on the Saints’ practice squad for a week, his parent team came calling again following an injury to the then second-year tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins. He returned on  September 22, 2015, and played in 14 games (4 starts) in the 2015 season wherein he caught 23 passes for 288 yards and 3 touchdowns. The next season, he replaced Seferian-Jenkins as the starting tight end following the latter’s departure. Brate had 57 receptions for 660 yards and 8 TDs in 15 games with 10 starts as well as converted the highest percentage of red zone targets into touchdowns among the league’s tight end players in 2016. The Buccaneers signed him to a six-year $41 million deal on March 12, 2018.

Height, Weight, Body Stats, and Other Facts

One of the factors that diminish a player’s effectiveness and productivity in gridiron is size. The others may include strong physique and physical fitness. Brate’s athleticism may have been undermined by his size which was 5’ 9” and 145 pounds in weight during his high school days, but a growth spurt saw him bloom into an athlete with the desired physique – he added more weight and grew taller than 6 feet.

With his height of 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m), a body weight of 245 lb (107 kg), arm length that measures 32 inches, and hands like bear traps that can easily catch the ball, Cameron Brate is a good offense pick for any team.

Post his football career, Brate intends to pursue another career in finance; he once expressed that he would be getting an MBA. Also, owing to his love for football, he hinted at staying around the game even after his career therein. He would either become a coach or help athletes manage their finances, thereby putting his education to good use.

The Tampa Bay tight end also enjoys playing the piano.
