Jalen Hurts Biography

Jalen Hurts was born on the 7th day of August 1998 in Channelview, Texas where he was also raised. The son of a former football player, Hurts began playing football in Channelview High School.

In addition to football, the lad also competed as a powerlifter. Hurts had an impressive high school career, making it to the second-team all-district selection as a sophomore, and named the District 21-6A Overall MVP in his junior year. Jalen Hurts rushed 1,391 yards and scored 25 touchdowns in his senior year.

He was rated a 4-star recruit and despite interest from Texas A&M, chose the University of Alabama where, as a true freshman, he became the starting quarterback, an unprecedented occurrence under the leadership of head coach Nick Saban who has an affinity for experienced quarterbacks.

Jalen Hurts broke many records in his freshman year and won the SEC Freshman of the Year award. He led the team to the SEC title and was also named SEC Offensive Player of the Year. In 2017, he won the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship.

Hurts, after winning 26 of his 28 starts, surprisingly lost his starting position to true freshman Tua Tagovailoa in the 2018 season. As a result, many speculated that he would transfer to another school, however, coach Saban was able to  as a back-up.

Parents, Siblings

Jalen Hurts probably would not have attained this height had it not been for the dedication of his parents, Averion Sr. and Pamela Hurts towards his career. His father Averion Sr. served as his football coach throughout his days in high school both in the junior and senior years. It was his father who suggested he took a step further in powerlifting, a key aspect of every footballer’s training.

Jalen’s father is a former football player who began his career at Channelview (Texas) High School, the same high school his son would come to attend years later. He graduated with the class of 1986. He attended Howard Payne University where he played college football and actively participated in track and field events. Averion Sr. graduated in 1990 with a major in marketing.

Before becoming the coach at Channelview in 2006, Averion Hurts Sr. coached the football team of Robert E. Lee High School in Bytown Texas.

Jalen Hurts’ mom, Pamela also has a job involving high school students. A holder of two degrees; B.A in Business Administration and M Sc. in Counseling, she is the chair of the special services department at Channelview ISD. She is also a math special education teacher at the school. Pamela Hurts also works at the LCPL Anthony Aguirre Junior High School.

Jalen Hurts is the middle child of his family. He has an older brother named Averion Jr. after their father and a younger sister named Kynnedy. Jalen’s older brother Averion also played football at Channelview and both were coached by their father.

Averion Jr. played college football at Kilgore JC in Texas for two seasons before transferring to Texas Southern University where he became the starting quarterback. Their parents would often split to be at each of the boy’s games anytime their fixture clashed in the same weekend.

In his senior year, Averion Jr. threw 1,857 yards, scored 12 touchdowns and completed 51.1. percent of his passes. After college, he followed in their father’s footsteps to begin a coaching career as the coach of a youth team. Jalen often refers to and says he modeled his game after him.
