Since RuPaul’s Drag Race came on the scene in early 2009, it has become something of a phenomenon. The TV show is unarguably the best and biggest drag queen related show to ever grace screens anywhere on the planet.
— the man behind the show — seems to have the Midas touch. This is made evident by the fact RuPaul’s Drag Race has given us some really noteworthy moments to savor forever. It has also inspired sister shows like RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, and RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars. Unsurprisingly, the show had different networks and streaming services, like Hulu and Logo, justling for partnerships with the reality television franchise.
The drag queen show continues to amass followers by the thousands. And with the growing audience and changing viewership partnerships, the biggest question remains: where can one watch RuPaul’s Drag Race? Is it on streaming services like Netflix or Hulu?
Can RuPaul’s Drag Race Be Streamed On Hulu Or Netflix?
The reality television show has enjoyed bountiful viewership numbers in its time, starting with Logo TV and WOW Presents Plus in its first eight seasons. Viacom’s VH1 took over the viewership license for the show ahead of its ninth season in 2017. The American pay television network continues to hold that license after the show’s 11th season.
As much as VH1 is available to every viewer committed to paying a monthly cable subscription, this only caters to one sector of the show’s fans — live viewers. Those who are too busy to watch the show live need an alternative way to binge run RuPaul’s Drag Race reruns.
Options for watching the show besides live airing have always been relatively difficult to come by — especially in the US — since the competition’s invention. Streaming services like Hulu and Netflix have always had their restrictions on how they made the show available. Up until the end of season 8, the show was available for streaming on Hulu and Logo’s website but those deals have long ended. Meanwhile, fans of the show in the UK get to watch episodes of the show a day after they air, thanks to an agreement with Netflix UK.
It seems the show’s American audience has been shortchanged for too long. Thankfully, a new deal that kicked off in September 2019 has made RuPaul’s Drag Race available again on Hulu, although this is restricted to only the first six seasons along with their corresponding Untucked seasons. In July 2019, the show’s first five seasons also started streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Other Ways To Watch RuPaul’s Drag Race
Besides going through the Amazon Prime or Hulu route, there are a few other ways you can watch episodes or seasons of the show. This is surprisingly one of the relatively cheaper options for fans of the show to consider — iTunes. RuPaul’s Drag Race can be found on iTunes and it will set you back just $24.99 for access to an entire season. Google Play offers the same for an even lower payment of $14.99 for a season pass. You’ll get access to each new episode 24 hours after they are aired. If you don’t need an entire season and only want access to episodes you missed, iTunes will charge you $2.99 per episode.
The advantage of going this route is that when you purchase a season or episode, you own it forever. This means you can watch and rewatch your favorite seasons and episodes whenever you feel like it since your access to them never expires.
There’s also the option of SlingTV’s “Lifestyle Extra” bundle. Sling Orange package will normally cost $20 a month. However, with an extra $5 tacked onto that amount, you can get access to VH1 on Sling TV. DirecTV also offers VH1 live streaming but at $10 higher, bringing its monthly commitment to $35.
For the more traditional viewers who have no problem going for broke to get the physical copies of RuPaul’s Drag Race, there’s always the option of buying the DVD releases of the show as seasons 1 – 8 have all enjoyed DVD releases. However, the seasons available for DVD purchase will continue to vary with time. Seasons 6 – 8 are currently available on Amazon for purchase at anywhere from $24.99 to $49.45, depending on the season you’re going for. Every available DVD also includes extras and special features like bonus scenes, episodes of Untucked (Season 6), and episodes of Whatcha Packin’ (seasons 7 and 8) among other Drag Race extras.
