Candy Crowley is a veteran multi-award-winning news anchor and political commentator. She had an illustrious career at CNN which spanned nearly 3 decades. She was the chief political commentator and anchor of the network’s weekly news talk show State of the Union.

During her long stint as CNN political correspondent, Crowley visited all the states of the United States as she covered presidential, congressional, and gubernatorial US elections for more than 20 years. Candy Crowley describes herself as a hard-news journalist, known for engaging newsmakers in tough discussions in a firm but polite manner.

Candy Crowley’s Early Days and Rise to Fame

She was born Candance Alt Crowley on December 26, 1948, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Her father was a salesman while her mother was a homemaker at the time. When she was just 6 months old, her family moved to St. Louis, Missouri where she was raised.

Candy Crowley had her early childhood through high school education at The Principia School in St. Louis County. She graduated from high school in 1966 and had her college education at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia. Records have it that she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, that was in 1970.

Crowley had planned to get married to her college boyfriend (who was the love of her life) and become a housewife. However, those dreams were shattered as they broke up soon after graduation and she relocated to Washington. Her first job was as a freelance writer for the National Education Association magazine.

It is known that her journey into journalism began on Metromedia radio station WASH‑FM where she served as a newsroom assistant. She also worked as a news anchor for Mutual Broadcasting System radio network and later as white house correspondent for the Associated Press Radio Network.

Crowley took a 6-year hiatus to raise her children and when she got back, she was rehired by the Associated Press. It was during this second stint that Crowley got noticed by NBC executives and she was eventually hired. In 1987, Crowley left NBC for CNN marking the beginning of what has turned out to be a prolific career.

She has been described as a woman that lives and breathes politics. She started out in CNN as a freelancer and 2 years after that, she was hired fulltime. In 1995, Crowley became the national political correspondent and served as the host of Inside Politics before the show was replaced with The Situation Room. In February 2010, the lady was appointed anchor of CNN’s Sunday morning news talk show State of the Union, a position she held till she retired in 2014.

During her career, Candy Crowley received numerous accolades including the 1997 Joan Shorenstein Barone Award for her coverage of Bob Dole’s presidential campaign and the 1999 DuPont-Columbia University Silver Baton Award for her coverage of former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial.

One of the hallmarks of her career was serving as the moderator of the second presidential election debate between former  and his Republican opponent Mitt Romney. With this, she became the first woman to take on such role since 1992. However, Crowley received some harsh criticisms for interjecting herself into the debate in defence of Obama, an act that is considered one of the greatest blunders for a moderator in the history of the presidential debates.

What Happened To Her?

After a 27-year long CNN career, Candy Cowley decided to leave the network in 2014. The decision was announced by the president of CNN Worldwide Jeff Zucker on December 5, 2014. Crowley’s last State of the Union broadcast was on December 21, 2014.

However, there were speculations that Crowley was forced to exit CNN. These speculations were never confirmed or refuted. It is assumed therefore that there was no bad blood between Crowley and her former employers and that she left the outlet amicably.

Where Is She Now?

Going by her brilliant career record, Candy Crowley was expected to move on with her career after leaving CNN and indeed there were several offers for her. However, the veteran political correspondent decided to take a break before making any further career choices.

Apparently, Candy Crowley decided to retire from daily work after leaving CNN. She joined Harvard University’s Institute of Politics as a fellow in fall 2015 and has continued to earn a living as a paid speaker.

Candy Crowley’s Husband

Candy Crowley is currently single. However, she had been married in the past but the marriage ended in a divorce. She got married at the age of 22 to a TV producer. The marriage lasted for 6 years and they had 2 children together. Her older son Jonathan is a neurosurgeon while the younger named Webster is a musician. Candy Crowley also has 2 stepchildren; a son and a daughter.
