Carla Suarez Navarro was born in the Canary Islands capital city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on the 3rd of September 1988.

As the daughter of a former handball player, her father José Luís, and her mother Lali; a former gymnast, Suarez Navarro was blessed with an abundance of athletic genes.

From around the age of nine, she began playing tennis but it was at around 17 that she began to take the sport seriously and actively worked to make a career out of it.

In 2007, her parents were able to get in touch with the Spanish Federation who moved her to Barcelona to train at the renowned Pro-Ab Team Tennis Academy.

Suarez Navarro subsequently made her first Grand Slam tournament appearance in the following year at the 2008 French Open where she was able to reach the quarterfinals, beating highly ranked players along the way, including the then former world number 1, Amelie Mauresmo, before falling to Jelena Jankovic.

At the 2009 Australian Open, Carla Suárez Navarro again made sure that her presence was felt by the supposed top players as she reached another Grand Slam quarterfinal, notably upsetting, a top 10 ranked player, along the way.

In 2010, Suarez Navarro again pulled off yet another huge upset as she defeated world No.3 player, Svetlana Kuznetsova, who was the top seed at the BNP Paribas Open.

Between 2010 and 2015, despite all the hype that she had built around her career as the next big thing in professional women’s tennis, Suarez Navarro was quite unable to win a Grand Slam tournament, or even make a semifinal appearance in the singles category.

Her notable achievements at that time were a semi-final appearance at the 2014 French Open doubles event and a finals appearance at the Miami Open where she was defeated.

A good run of performances that year, however, saw her enter the top ten of the world rankings. In 2016, she attained a career-high ranking of world number 6 as she won her biggest title ever, the Qatar Total Open.
