When the name Cary Elwes is mentioned, the first thing that comes to the minds of movie buffs who lived in the 80s is his fantasy romcom, The Princess Bride (1987), a film that earned huge critical acclaim and eventually became a cult classic. Elwes went on to build a very successful acting career. Cary Elwes was born Ivan Simon Cary Elwes on the 26th of October 1962 in Westminster, London. Elwes was raised in a Roman Catholic background and once served as an altar boy at Westminster Cathedral. Elwes’ parents were forced to separate when he was just 4 years old and when he had turned 12, his father took his own life.

After graduating from Harrow School, Cary Elwes attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He relocated to New York City in 1981 and further studied acting at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville. He also took acting classes at Actors Studio and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

From his teenage years, Cary had already begun working as a production assistant on film sets. He began acting professionally in 1984, making his debut in Another Country. Elwes acted in a handful of other films before making his big break with The Princess Bride. He began acting in the small screen in 1996 – making his debut in an episode of Seinfeld. He has since appeared in numerous TV shows most notably, The Art of More, and Life in Pieces.

Cary Elwes hails from quite a famous family of artists. His grandfather Simon Elwes, and father Bede Evelyn Dominick Elwes were both renowned English painters. Cary’s dad passed on the 5th of September 1975 at the age of 44. He died from a Barbiturate overdose.

In addition to his portraits, Bede was also famous for his elopement with the then 19-year-old shipping heiress, Tessa Kennedy (who would become Cary’s mother) in 1957 which was a highly publicized international scandal. Cary’s mother who is now a renowned interior designer Kennedy is the daughter of shipping magnate Geoffrey Ferrar Kennedy.

Her father had disapproved of their relationship, thus, Bede eloped with Tessa to Havana, Cuba where they got married on the 27th of January 1958. Kennedy’s parents kept trying to annul their marriage and Bede would finally turn himself over to the authorities in England. Their marriage was dissolved in London in January 1969. Cary’s father never remarried until his death while his mother Tessa would go on to marry American film producer Elliott Kastner in 1971. They separated in 1995.

From his parents’ marriage, Cary has two older brothers; film producer Cassian Elwes and artist Damian Elwes.

Cary Elwes’ wife is named Lisa Marie Kurbikoff. Lisa is a stills photographer. The couple got married on the 24th of June 2000 and have remained together ever since. They met in 1991 at a chilli cook-off in Malibu, California, and soon began a romantic relationship together.

By 1997, Elwes popped the question to her but the couple waited another three years before walking down the aisle. Cary Elwes and his wife occasionally take to their social media accounts to post sweet words about each other on days like their birthdays, anniversary, and other special days in their lives. Lisa was born on the 10th of May. The couple lives a fairly private life and has done a good job keeping their names off the tabloids.

Their union has been blessed by a child, a daughter named Dominique, who was born on the 24th of April 2007.
