Charlie Day is an American musician, screenwriter, comic actor and film producer. One of his most notable acting roles is that of Charlie Kelly on the long-running sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

On the big screen, Day has portrayed the character Dale Arbus in the comedy film Horrible Bosses (2011) and also reprised his role in the film’s 2014 sequel Horrible Bosses 2. He is also known for starring in Monsters University (2013), Pacific Rim (2013), The Lego Movie (2014), Fist Fight (2017) among several others.

Charlie Day’s Biography and Age

Charles Peckham Day was born on February 9, 1976, in New York City. However, he grew up mainly in Middletown, Rhode Island. His father is half Italian and half Irish. His mother is English, with minute degrees of Irish and Welsh ancestry.

Both his mother and father were academicians. His mother Mary (née Peckham) worked as a piano tutor at The Pennfield School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. His father, Dr. Thomas Charles Day, was a professor of music at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island.

Charlie Day had his early education at Pennfield School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He had his high school education at the Portsmouth Abbey School. He was a member of the school’s baseball team.

He had his college education at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts where he majored in art history. He was a notable member of the Merrimack’s student theater organization known as the Onstagers. As a college student, Charlie Day enrolled in the summer theater program of the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

Upon graduation, he ditched a very lucrative bank job in Boston and relocated to New York to pursue his dreams of becoming an actor. After proving his talents in a number of stage plays, Charlie Day began to attract a few television roles. However, the then-struggling actor also had to work as a waiter to help support himself.

He featured in the sitcom Madigan Men (2000) as well as the popular crime drama series Law & Order (2001). From 2001 to 2004, Charlie Day starred in the NBC crime series Third Watch in the recurring role of Michael Boscorelli. He was also on the main cast of the short-lived sitcom Luis (2003).

In 2003, Charlie Day and his friends pitched and sold the pilot for the comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to the FX network. Filming of the hit comedy series began in 2004 which marked the beginning of Charlie Day’s illustrious career as a comedian.

His role as Charlie Kelly in long-running series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is regarded as the breakthrough role of his acting career. He is among the executive producers of the show and he is also one of the primary writers of the show. The multi-talented actor is credited to have written many of the songs featured in the show. In 2011, Charlie Day received nominations for Best Actor in a Comedy Series at the Critics’ Choice Television Award and Satellite Award.

His early film credits include Bad Company (2002), A Quiet Little Marriage (2008) as well as Going the Distance (2010). Charlie Day recorded his big screen breakthrough in the 2011 hit comedy film Horrible Bosses starring alongside ,  and Jamie Foxx.

The multi-talented actor lent his voice to the character Art in the animated comedy film Monsters University (2013). Also in 2013, Day starred as Newton Geiszler in the Sci-Fi blockbuster Pacific Rim (2013) alongside Idris Elba and . He equally reprised his role in its 2018 sequel Pacific Rim Uprising. Charlie Day starred opposite and in the comedy film Fist Fight (2017).

On November 5, 2011, Charlie Day served as a guest host on NBC’s Saturday Night Live (SNL) on an episode which also featured Maroon 5. In 2014, Charlie Day was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in performing arts by his Alma mater Merrimack College.

Family – Wife, Son

Charlie is married to actress Mary Elizabeth Ellis. The duo met in 2001 while working as theater actors. They tied the knot on March 4, 2006. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Russell Wallace Day, on December 15, 2011.

 

Ellis is popularly known for her recurring role as “The Waitress” starring alongside her husband in the long-running series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005–present). In 2004, the couple starred as inbred twins in the comedy series Reno 911!. Mary Elizabeth Ellis has also starred in several other sitcoms including Perfect Couples (2011), New Girl (2011–2014), The Grinder (2015–2016) among others.
