The Bailey sisters, Chloe X Halle are amazingly exceptional, for reasons, some of which we already know and the others we would soon discover. Prior to the stellar association with who discovered them in 2013 after they did a perfect cover of her song, Pretty Hurts, Chloe X Halle was already set on the way to greatness.

They won US network Radio Disney’s Next Big Thing Award in 2012 and were diligently carving out a name for themselves on YouTube as teenagers. They also have fans in , , and . The duo performed twice for the former first lady; as the opening act to her keynote speech at SXSW Music Festival, then at the White House Easter Egg Roll and were featured on her all-star charity single for girls education.

In 2018, the American contemporary R&B duo earned nominations from the Grammy.

Chloe X Halle – Background Information

Chloe is the older of the duo. She was born on July 1, 1998, while Halle followed on the 27th day of March 2000, both in Atlanta, Georgia. Although none of their parents is musically inclined, Doug, a former stockbroker and Courtney Bailey, a recruitment officer discovered what a voice they were blessed with as early as when they were toddlers. They also have a younger brother, Branson.

Chloe’s natural vibrato voice and perfect pitch were already filling their home when she was 3 and Halle followed in her sister’s footsteps as soon as she was able to say some words. Eventually, she developed her own ear for jazz by listening to legends like  and Sarah Vaughan.

Like most parents, the Baileys hoped their kids would have a normal childhood, but their environment had a different idea. Growing up in Atlanta which is a kind of child-model feeder market, the girls couldn’t shy away from showbiz. Courtney got them into auditions to help them build self-esteem, comfort around strangers, a foundation for public speaking, as well as to read scripts and rehearse, not ruling out the possibility of scoring a gig. But what she never saw was that her girls would become superstars and internet sensations.

That was the first time the family actually met Queen Bey and they still have a picture of her hugging little Chloe at the wrap party. Fast forward to a decade later, Chloe X Halle signed with her and she also became their fairy-godmother/mentor.

Chloe X Halle had their first musical performance at a talent show for a summer day camp for Spelman College when they were 7 and 5 respectively. They won the show and that began their winning streak. Then, they performed in local charity awards and talent showcases and also had small parts in the movie The Last Holiday.

Itching to have the world see and hear them, they went on YouTube in 2008 where they did mostly covers of pop songs. Their first cover was an a cappella cover of Beyoncé’s Best Thing I Never Had. Then, they got the attention of  who invited them to The Ellen Show after which they went on Radio Disney’s The Next Big Thing. They won the televised contest of the show after a criss-cross country tour.

With more tours in tow, they also appeared in several TV shows including Disney series Austin & Ally, Disney TV musical movie Let It Shine. They switched to homeschooling and the family moved to Los Angeles. Their father also quit his job to become their manager.

Meteoric Rise to Stardom

Their big break came in 2013 after they rendered a heartfelt piano and voice cover of Beyonce’s Pretty Hurts. This time, they caught the attention of Beyoncé herself, as well as her label Parkwood Entertainment imprint who went on to sign them as one of three young female acts signed to her label.

Though they have mostly done covers on their YouTube channel up until they were discovered by Bey, Chloe X Halle are surprisingly avid and amazing songwriters. They released their debut five-song EP titled Sugar Symphony in April 2016 and wrote and produced most of the songs including Drop and Fall. The same year, they also appeared as members of Beyoncé’s black-girl squad in the visual album for Lemonade alongside model  and actresses Quvenzhané Wallis and Amandla Stenberg. Moreover, Chloe X Halle is featured in the tableau that has become the album’s defining image.

Next, she took them on tour with her in 2016 where they served as Beyoncé’s opening act for the European leg of The Formation World Tour. In 2018, they also opened the Carter’s On the Run II Tour, alongside . Her influence in the life of the girls is undeniable. Her message of celebration of female power and the importance of self-worth are evident in their songs.

Chloe X Halle’s Acting and Modelling Stints

Chloe x Halle is also proven actors and models as well. They were cast as series regulars in Grown-ish, a spin-off for Black-ish in 2017. Additionally, they modelled for the FW18 lookbook for Rodarte alongside other talented women including Grimes, Ava Phillippe and .

The duo released the theme song for the series titled Grown in December 2017 and by March 23, 2018, they released their self-produced and self-written debut album, The Kids Are Alright which include singles Happy Without Me and Hi Lo.

Their Voices are as Different as Their Persona

Chloe and Halle are like two sides of a coin. At first glance, one would take them as twins, with glorious dreadlocked hair. Halle is a bit more reserved and calm while Chloe is the very energetic one but they are each other’s mirror and are best friends.

They sing so differently: Chloe fiercely strident, Halle with a languid dreaminess. While Chloe has the more classic R&B voice with heavy vibrato, her sister’s voice is tremulous with jazz inflexions.
