The American football running back, Chris Thompson has been a versatile player for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League (NFL). In addition to being a running back, Thompson has distinguished himself to be a wonderful pass catcher, a blocker, kick returner and change of pace back.

He was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the fifth round of the NFL draft of 2013. Chris played college football with the Seminoles of Florida State University. While he was there, he led the Seminoles to win the ACC championship in 2012. Read more about him below.

Chris Thompson’s Bio

Chris Thompson was born in Greenville, Florida on October 20, 1990. He was raised along with his other siblings by their parents Cynthia and Maurice James. Growing up, Thompson picked an interest in football which led him to join his high school team. He attended Madison High School, Florida. While he was there, Thompon played several positions both as a running back and return specialist. He led Madison high to win the state title after rushing for over 2,300 yards and 33 touchdowns.

At the completion of his high school career, Chris Thompson enrolled at the Florida State University where he played college football. While playing for the Seminoles, Thompson wrapped up his freshman year with 13 gameplays, recording 2 touchdowns, 23 carries and 120 rushing yards. In his sophomore year, he led the team to victory against South Carolina at the Chick-fil-A Bowl; thus becoming the Chick-fil-A Bowl MVP in 2010. He finished the season leading his team with six touchdowns, 134 carries, and 845 rushing yards.

In 2011, after playing five games for the Seminoles, Thompson broke two vertebrae in his back which ruled him out for the rest of the season. But he responded faster to rehab and after a few months, he made his way back to the field for the start of 2012. During the 2012 season, Chris Thompson led the team to the Atlantic Coast Conference where they emerged victoriously.

His season was cut short as he tore his ACL in his left knee in their game against Miami in October 2012. He had a total of five touchdowns, 91 carries, and 687 rushing yards in eight appearances that year.

NFL Career and Stats

Following an impressive college career, Thompson alongside teammate was among the 2013 draft prospects. During the 2013 draft, he was selected in the fifth round of the draft by the Washington Redskins. He was the 154th overall prospect to be selected in the draft. Signing up with the Redskins on a four-year contract, Thompson became a return specialist for the team replacing Richard Crawford who was injured.

And after struggling in the first four games in the 2013 season, Thompson was later replaced by Josh Morgan who won the starting shirt. He sustained an injury on his left labrum which kept him away from most games in his rookie season. He finished the season with a record of seven punt returns for 36 net yards as well as eight kick returns for 160 yards.

The following season, Thompson didn’t have much of playing time for the Redskins. He competed for the third-string running back position but lost it to Silas Redd. He was later featured in two games out of which he recorded his first career touchdown as well as three receptions. Thompson greatly improved in the 2015 season, having a total of 2 receiving touchdowns, 35 receptions, 216 rushing yards and 240 receiving yards.

During the 2016 season, Chris Thompson played 16 games for the Redskins; finishing the season with a total of two touchdowns, 49 receptions, 356 rushing yards and 349 receiving yards. He signed a two-year contract extension with the Redskins in 2017 and he featured in 10 games for the season. He had four touchdowns, 39 receptions as well as career-high of 510 receiving yards and 294 rushing yards.
