Multiple award-winning English actor Colin Firth is known for his stellar performances in movies like The King’s Speech, Pride and Prejudice, and Kingsman: The Secret Service. The brilliant actor took a while to really hit his stride in his career. However, after the immense success of 1995’s Pride and Prejudice, Firth has gone on to become one of the best actors from England to ever grace our television screens.
Colin sounds every bit as English as he looks. He is blessed with a square face and broad shoulders. Beyond his looks though, the actor has a reserved air of quiet dignity about him. Add this to his role as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice and it is easy to see why he is regarded as one of the best sex symbols of English television and beyond.
Colin Firth’s Bio and Age
Colin Andrew Firth’s life began on September 10, 1960 when he was born in Grayshott, Hampshire. The actor traveled the world as a kid. By the time he was 11, Colin had lived in three different countries on three continents. Owing to his parents’ work, he spent part of his childhood in Nigeria and the United States, before finally returning to the UK.
Upon his return, Firth enrolled at Montgomery of Alamein Secondary School for his secondary education. His experience at the institution was not a pleasant one. He suffered constant bullying and found it hard to fit in anywhere. He finally lost interest in his studies due to this experience. Growing up also, he loved the acting profession. Starting at the age of ten, Colin Firth became a regular attendee of acting classes and by the time he was 14, he was certain that he wanted to pursue it professionally.
Although he had lost interest in schooling, he fell in love with English literature while he was enrolled at the Barton Peveril Sixth Form College. Colin recalls his time there as the best two years of his academic life. He joined the National Youth Theatre in London after leaving Barton.
At the theatre, he worked in the wardrobe department before leaving to hone his skills at the Drama Centre London where he started involving himself in stage productions. His first play saw him portray Hamlet. Firth’s performance was noticed and he was selected to play Tommy Judd in the 1983 stage play titled Another Country. His television debut came with him reprising the role in the film adaptation of the stage play in 1984.
Four years later, he was a soldier Robert Lawrence on BBC’s Tumbledown. The movie was a tribute to a real-life soldier of the same name who memorably fought at the Battle of Mount Tumbledown. His portrayal of the role received high praise.
But it wasn’t until 1995 that Colin really became a force in the industry. He was chosen to play Mr. Darcy in the television version of the iconic Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice. In 1998, the actor played Lord Wessex in the dramedy Shakespeare in Love. The movie was a fictional story of Shakespeare falling in love while writing one of his stories.
Colin Firth’s role on Mr. Darcy was ultra-successful but brought with it the danger that he was falling into a stereotype. For a time, he only got to play similar roles on projects like Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001). He was cast as Jamie in the Christmas-themed romantic comedy Love Actually (2003).
In 2010, the Brit played another role that would turn out to be one of the best of his career. He was cast as King George VI in the epic drama The King’s Speech. On the film, his character was a King who had a severe stammering problem and was fighting to overcome it while handling the affairs of his Kingdom.
In 2014, he appeared as Harry Hart/Galahad in the first installment of the Kingsman films, Kingsman: The Secret Service. He reprised the role in 2017 in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. In 2018, Colin Firth played Wilkin’s in Rob Marshall’s family fantasy Mary Poppins Returns.
The actor has received many awards and nominations for his character portrayals. He received a BAFTA Award and an Austin Film Critics Association Award for his role as George Falconer in A Single Man (2009). He also won another BAFTA Award and Academy Award for his characterization of King George VI on The King’s Speech.
Is he Gay?
The British actor is not immune to the spinning of the rumor mill. Colin Firth is as straight as they come. However, the rumor concerning his sexual orientation does have some roots, no matter how feeble.
In 2009, the actor played the role of George, a gay professor suffering depression as a result of the loss of his lover eight years prior. Firth’s portrayal of the character was so convincing that he won a few awards for his troubles.
Colin Firth’s Family: Wife, Children, and Brother

His grandparents on both sides of the family were Church ministers.
Firth met Meg Tilly in 1989 while they were on the set of the movie Valmont. They soon entered into a relationship and even relocated to Canada. Colin had a son together William Joseph Firth. They never got married, however, and called time on their romance in 1994.
Colin returned to the UK where he met Livia Giuggioli who worked as a production assistant. They got married in 1997 and had their first child, a son in 2001. They named him Luca Firth. The second, another son, Matteo Firth came in 2003. When they started dating, the actor committed himself to learn Livia’s native Italian language and can now speak it fluently.
