Cynthia Calvillo is an American mixed martial artist of Mexican descent who fights under the promotion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the strawweight division. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, and Muay Thai style fighter is known for her aggressiveness which has made her a force to reckon with in the sport.

Biography

Cynthia Calvillo was born to Mexican immigrant parents in San Jose California, U.S.A on the 13th of July 1987. As a child, Calvillo showed huge interest in sports as she would always play American football in the field or on concrete in the streets with her brothers and neighbors. She described herself as a tomboy because she was never into anything girly and was always willing to fight anyone who would challenge her.

Calvillo had envisioned going down a different life part but she found herself training to become an MMA fighter at the age of 23 after having fallen in love watching the sport. It took her two years to learn the ropes of the sport as she went ahead to make her amateur debut in February 2012 against Stefanie Harrison who she knocked out in the first round. The pair met again a few months later and Calvillo again recorded victory in the first round via technical knockout.

Between 2012 and 2014, Cynthia Calvillo racked up an impressive 5-1 amateur record which prompted her to turn professional. Her transition to professional mixed martial arts fighting was however put on hold for a few years after she broke her forearm in the same place on three separate occasions. Calvillo blamed the repeated injuries on not having good insurance and the best doctors to advice and guide her because she was always making an early comeback which always aggravated the injury.

By 2016, Calvillo had fully recuperated to make a blistering start to her professional fighting career as she recorded three victories in the space of five months against Jessica Sanchez-Birch, Gillian Robertson, and Montana De La Rosa. Her performances caught the attention of the UFC who offered her a chance to fight Amanda Cooper at UFC 209 within a 10-day period. Calvillo accepted the offer and went ahead to make her UFC bow which she celebrated by defeating Cooper in the first round via submission.

Her very successful UFC debut then earned her a spot on the main card of UFC 210 against Pearl Gonzalez who she beat via a rear-naked choke submission. Her next fight came against Joanne Calderwood at UFC Fight Night 113. The bout was marred by Calderwood’s weight issues but the fighters still went ahead to fight, with Calvillo coming out victorious. The champion fighter found herself feeling untouchable thanks to her unbeaten record but she was soon brought back down to earth in her next fight which was against Carla Esparza. She lost it by a thin margin via unanimous decision.
