Danilo Gallinari is an NBA player of Italian descent. Danilo who is popularly called Gallo (which means rooster in Italian) by friends and fans was born in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, Italy on the 8th of August 1988 to Vittorio and Marilisa Gallinari.
His father was also a professional basketball player. During his active years, he played with several teams including the Olimpia Milano of the LBA and Scaligera Basket Verona of the Italian League, among many others.
Being the son of a basketball player, Gallinari was drawn to the game at quite an early age but his journey as a professional took off in 2004 with the Casalpusterlengo – a team in Italian Serie B1. The following year, Armani Jeans Milano acquired him and sent him off to Edimes Pavia which was to compete in the Italian league second division championship 2005/2006 season.
He was only able to play half of the season that year due to an injury. The following year, he played in sixteen games and nailed an average of 14.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 2.0 steals to earn the best Italian player award in the Italian League second division championship.
In that same year (2006), Olimpia Milano recalled him to be part of the squad to compete in several competitions that season. Some of the events that season include the Italian league first division championship, the 2nd level tier European wide cup competition, and the EuroCup (previously called the ULEB).
In his first season, Danilo Gallinari did not only record an average of 10.9 points, 1.7 steals, 1.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game in thirty-four season games but he also averaged 11.5 points, 2.1 steals, 0.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game in eight playoff games to be named the Leagues’ player that is under the age of twenty-two.
The 2007/2008 season would be his first time of playing in the EuroLeague where he also recorded amazing stats to win the league’s Rising Star Award for the season.
NBA Career
Danilo’s contract with Olimpia Milano came with the provision of playing abroad, especially in the U.S. The escape clause also eliminated major obstacles that could prevent him from joining the National Basketball Association (NBA), so, in 2008, he declared for the NBA Draft and was selected by the New York Knicks as 6th overall.
He signed a two-year contract with the team. He, however, missed some games during the 2008/09 season due to back problems. He remained with the team till early 2011 when he was traded to the Denver Nuggets. In his first game with the team, he scored a career-high of thirty points in the game against the Portland Trail Blazers which ended in a loss.
During the 2011 NBA lockout, Danilo Gallinari returned to his home country and joined the Emporio Armani Milan only to return in 2012 after the lockout to sign a contract extension with the Nuggets. He would miss the remainder of the 2012/13 season and the entire of 2013–14 season due to an ACL injury.
He returned to play with the team in October 2014. In August 2015, he signed a 2-year contract extension with the team and in February 2016, he recorded a season-high of thirty-three points in a game against the Chicago Bulls which ended in a 115–110 win. Unfortunately, he missed the last twenty-two games of the season as a result of an ankle injury.
In July 2017, he was acquired by the Los Angeles Clippers in a trade that sent Diamond Stone and Jamal Crawford off to the Denver Nuggets. His debut game with his new team is in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers where he scored eleven points. He is still with the Clippers till date (as at the time of writing this).
