Danny Welbeck is a professional footballer who currently plays in the English Premier League for Arsenal.
The injury-prone striker, who can also play as a winger, represents England at the international level despite having direct links to Ghana through both his parents. Coincidentally, Welbeck made his senior debut for England in a match against Ghana at Wembley Stadium.
Biography
Danny Welbeck was born Daniel Nii Tackie Mensah Welbeck on the 26th of November, 1990, in Longsight, Manchester, United Kingdom, to Elizabeth Tumtuo and Victor Chris Welbeck. His father, Victor, hails from the Greater Accra region of Ghana while his mother, Elizabeth, is from Nkawie in the Ashanti region of Ghana.
Welbeck grew up in a middle-class home that encouraged his dream of becoming a footballer. He started off playing for local side Fletcher Moss before joining Manchester United’s youth academy at the age of 8. He played for Manchester United’s different youth teams where his natural abilities shone bright and caught the attention of some senior players like Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Roy Keane, who took time out to mentor the young lad.
In the 2005-06 season, Welbeck featured for the Manchester under-18 team. The following year, he signed his first trainee contract and was almost immediately promoted to the reserve team. He went on to make his senior debut for United in the 2007-08 season, playing bit-part roles.
The bit-part roles continued up until January 2010 when he was sent out on a short loan to get a much needed first team action. He joined Championship side Preston North End, which was managed by Sir Alex Ferguson’s son, Darren Ferguson. It was during his time there that his injury problems began to surface. Having been suffering from Osgood-Schlatter disease, Danny Welbeck experienced swellings in his knee. His loan deal was immediately cut short as he had to return to his parent club to undergo surgery.
In August that same year, he joined Sunderland on a year-long loan deal for the 2010-11 season. He took that opportunity by the scruff of the neck as he scored key goals for his new side, prompting calls for him to be capped by the English national team before Ghana was able to tie him down. Welbeck, however, suffered more injury problems and was restricted to making only 28 appearances for Sunderland before he returned back to Manchester United to seek treatment.
Danny Welbeck returned to Manchester United for the following campaign and was given a starting role alongside Wayne Rooney. He played in a total of 39 games that season, scoring 12 times to make it his most prolific season with the club. From that time to the end of 2013-14 season, Welbeck never looked like he was reaching the heights he had hoped for as playing time was hard to come by with him being played out of his preferred position.
On transfer deadline day in September 2014, Welbeck left Manchester for London, joining Arsenal for a fee of around 16 million pounds. Having been previously compared to former Arsenal strikers Emmanuel Adebayor and Nwankwo Kanu while growing up, Welbeck was pleased to have joined the club of his boyhood hero, Thierry Henry. He worked very hard to prove his detractors wrong but was again blighted by injury.
Danny Welbeck continues to show signs of being the brilliant world class player everyone thought he would be, but only if he manages to keep himself fit would he ever achieve those lofty heights.
Personal Life – Girlfriend
Danny Welbeck has always preferred to let the world know very little about his personal life. Ever since he came into the limelight playing for Manchester United, there has not been a story from any tabloid that has linked him to any girl. The closest we have come to a story of a possible girlfriend was when he got into a Twitter fight with a Nigerian girl based in Canada named Opeoluwa.
The fight, started when the girl posted a picture of her and the footballer star saying that he was stupid and irritating and Danny replied, fueling the fight. It lasted for just a few minutes as the girl immediately deleted the photo from her profile.
