Rohit Sharma’s Biography

Rohit Sharma was born on April 30, 1987, as Rohit Gurunath Sharma. He was born to an Indian family and was raised in Bansod, Nagpur, Maharashtra, to Gurunath Sharma and Purnima Sharma a descendant of Visakhapatnam, India’s largest city. He, however, grew up alongside his younger brother Vishal, with his grandparents as his father’s income could not fend for them.

Sharma’s love for cricket only began to materialize at his early age of eight and he was lucky enough to gain the support of one of his uncles who gave him money to joined a cricket camp in 1999. Upon seeing his potentials in the game, the cricket coaching camp leader Dinesh Lad encouraged him to move to Swami Vivekanand International School which had better cricket facilities. This Rohit successfully did with the help of Lad who helped him gain a four- year scholarship in the institution. There, he started as an off-spinner and later excelled as an opener scoring a century in the Harris and Giles Shield school cricket tournaments.

Rohit Sharma made his domestic cricket debut for West Zone in a Trophy match against Central Zone at Gwalior in March 2005. He scored 142 in 123 balls against North Zone at Udaipur in the same tournament much to the delight of his fans. The following year, he made his First-class debut for India A against New Zealand A, at Darwin. After this then came his Ranji debut for Mumbai in the 2006-07 season, where he scored a double-century against Gujarat.

Sharma made his One Day International (ODI) debut in 2007, during India’s tour. The match was against Ireland at Belfast, although he did not bat in the match. The tear was remarkable for Sharma as he was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ for leading his country’s team to a victory with an unbeaten 50 off 40 balls against South Africa in the 2007 ICC World Twenty20. Sharma also scored his maiden ODI half-century against Pakistan, at Jaipur on 18 November 2007 and was selected for Australia’s Commonwealth Bank Series 2007–08, where he scored 2 more centuries.

Despite facing some difficulties that cost him his middle-order position in the team in the 2009 and 2010 season, Sharma still rose up to become the only batsman in the world to breach the 200 mark in ODIs twice and one of the players with the highest individual score in ODIs – 264.

Due to his excellent performances, he was quickly promoted to open with Shikhar Dhawan for the Champions Trophy in 2013. Rohit also received the ‘Arjuna Award’ from the Indian Government in 2015. In December 2017, Sharma made the world record by scoring the joint-fastest century off 35 balls in Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka. Hence he is so far the only Indian who has centuries in all formats of cricket, other than Suresh Raina. The same year, he was named the Indian captain after the team’s former captain jit Agarkar retired. Sharma was even selected to lead India for the Nidahas Trophy in March 2018.
