Dave Navarro is not an unknown name among tattoo fans or alternative rock music fans. He is a prominent figure on both sides of the art aisle. Born on June 7, 1967, to James Raul Navarro and Constance Colleen Hopkins, he’s grown into a prominent figure in American culture even though he is of Mexican descent. He was born in Santa Monica, California. As a kid, he had a pretty normal childhood, attending Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California, where he developed a passion for music and instruments, joining the school marching band and playing with future Jane’s Addiction mate, Stephen Perkins.
Navarro’s quiet life took a tragic turn in 1983 when his mother, Constance was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, John Riccardi. Losing your mother to violence is a difficult place to be in. It changes you for life and takes a lot of strength to go on and have a normal life. Novarro found his strength in music, channelling his pain into his guitar. He became an official part of Jane’s Addiction in 1986, three years after his mother was killed.
As a member of Jane’s Addiction, he became the band’s lead guitarist. With Dave Navarro, the band rose in heights and became one of the most popular bands in alternative rock music. Before the group disbanded, Navarro and the rest of the band put out three albums in 1987, 1988, 1990. The band broke up in 1991.
The famous Lollapalooza festival was a creation of Perry Farrell, who started it as a farewell tour for the band. After a brief period playing with Guns N’ Roses, Navarro formed his own music band, Deconstruction, with Eric Avery and Michael Murphy. The band released one album in their short existence. In 1993, he moved on to become a part of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Navarro released one album, One Hot Minute with the band and it sold over eight million copies, with three hit singles.
Navarro’s struggle with drug addiction ended up getting him fired from Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1998. Usually found in a band, Navarro gave his solo career a whirl in 2001 after signing for Capitol Records. He released the album Trust No One as his solo debut album. Shortly after his solo debut, Jane’s Addiction reformed and released a new album, Strays. Throughout his career, Navarro has worked with a host of artists and musicians. Although he’s a rock artist, he has worked with musicians from other genres like , , and John Lennon.
Outside of music, Dave Navarro has featured in various reality TV shows. He appeared on the show, Celebrity Poker Showdown in 2004. He has also had a stint in adult movies, directing one in 2007. His movie won the Best High-End All-Sex Release award at the AVN Awards. He has worked with animal rights group, PETA in support of their anti-fur campaign. On television, Navarro has appeared in television shows like , Law and Order: SVU and Talking Dead. Apart from his stint with Jane’s Addiction after the group reunited again in 2008, he is the host and one of the judges in Ink Master, a tattoo competition reality show.
