A Grammy-winning singer and two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, David Crosby is one of those people who can actually claim to have done it all. He is a singer and songwriter who has had a very great career thus far, both as a solo singer and member of the bands Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Even though he is popular as David Crosby, the American singer was actually born David Van Cortlandt Crosby on August 14, 1941, in Los Angeles, California. As his name rightly suggests, he is from the popular Van Cortlandt family through his mother, Aliph Van Cortlandt Whitehead. His father, Floyd Crosby was a famous Academy Award-winning cinematographer.

Of Dutch descent, he was brought up together with an older brother who was also a musician named Ethan Crosby. While he was growing up, he went to different schools such as the University Elementary School, Crane Country Day School, and Laguna Blanca School in Los Angeles, Montecito, and Santa Barbara respectively. From Laguna Blanca, he moved to Cate School in Carpinteria where he completed his secondary education.

Crosby was not the best kid in terms of academic achievements but he was very talented when it came to music. Thus, when he went to Santa Barbara City College where he had hoped to get a drama degree, he soon dropped out so as to give his complete attention to his musical career.

After leaving school, Crosby joined Terry Callier and together, they were off to New York. In 1964, he founded The Byrds with Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark but left the band in 1967, though he later returned. Other bands that he became a part of include Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Crosby & Nash, and CPR. More so, he also pursued a solo career.

In 1971, he released his debut solo album If I Could Only Remember My Name and it was followed by Oh Yes I Can (1989), Thousand Roads (1993), and Croz (2014). He has other albums with his different bands. His first album with Crosby, Stills & Nash which was released in 1969 Crosby, Stills & Nash, earned him a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
