David Michael Draiman aka David Draiman is one of those who have brought the genre to new heights, valiantly preserving it. He is an American songwriter and the vocalist for the metal band Disturbed, known for their fist banging anthems as well as for the band Device.

He started his own record label known as Intoxication Records in 2003 and was voted number 42 on the Hit Parader’s “Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time” in 2006.
David was one of five artists who sang the Queen of the Damned soundtrack, along with Wayne Static of Static-X, Jay Gordon of Orgy, of Linkin Park, and Marilyn Manson. Many other facts are worth knowing about him. Let’s take the dive.

David Draiman’s Bio (Age, Religion)

The Disturbed frontman was born on March 13, 1973, in Flatbush hospital, located in a suburb of Brooklyn, New York, the USA. His mother is Miriam Draiman and his father, YJ Draiman was a real estate developer, a business owner as well as an elected member of the Northridge East Neighborhood Council. He also ran for the post of mayor of Los Angeles in 2017.

David Draiman is a well-noted supporter of Israel. His maternal grandparents are both survivors of the Holocaust and his grandmother lives in Israel. His parents are observant and religious Jews, thus his religion is Judaism. Though he did not follow the religious path, he is totally proud of his Jewish heritage.

He is not the only musician in the family, his younger brother Benjamin has been a pianist and singer-songwriter since age 13. He is a social worker and also an ambient/folk rock musician based in Israel and performs in Jerusalem.

Education

Being born to Orthodox Jew (dati) parents has its own attendant expectations. For David, his parents wanted him to be ordinated as a rabbi or a cantor (semikhah) leading to his regularly spending time in Israel during his early life. And that would also reflect on his education; he attended a number of Jewish day schools which include Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Valley Torah High School, Los Angeles, Fasman Yeshiva High School, Chicago, Illinois.

David, however, had his own plans. He didn’t want to be confined to the standards, rules and the rigorous religious requirements of the schools, he rather opted to be a normal adolescent. He was expelled from three of the schools he attended and left the fourth one of his own free will. David formed his first band during his days in one of those schools – the Valley Torah High School, Los Angeles, California.

Though he was resentful of his study in those schools, he later encouraged his family to observe the Jewish day of rest also known as Shabbat or Sabbath and would later train as a hazzan (cantor, one who leads the Jewish congregation in prayer).

despite his rebellion in high school, he was a good student and got good grades to show for it. He graduated from Ida Crown Jewish Academy, Chicago, Illinois in 1991 marking an end to his high school career. For the next one year after his graduation, David Draiman was in Israel studying at the Yeshivas Neveh Zion in Kiryat Ye’arim, on the outskirts of Jerusalem. According to him, he wanted to look into religion on his own and decide what he wanted to believe and what he didn’t.

On his return to the United States in 1992, he showed a genuine thirst for knowledge and enrolled for pre-law studies at Loyola University Chicago where he triple majored in Political Science, Philosophy, and Business Administration and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1996.

He worked as a bank teller and in phone sales while he was in the university. Following his graduation, David worked as an administrative assistant in a healthcare facility, and after his first year on the job, he got an administrator’s license and started his own healthcare facility. He worked as a healthcare administrator for five years and was considering law school before he set up camp with the Disturbed band.

David’s Music Career

From his days as a cantor, he has a bit of vocal training which he fully utilized in his later years as a vocalist. He first got involved in music when he was at the school in Los Angeles, he did this with a punk rock band which covered Ramones and Sex Pistols and a couple of originals. He said in an interview with that Disturbed was the seventh band group he joined.

He became the frontman of the band group and is known for his distinctive rhythmic vocal character and percussive singing style. Disturbed released five studio albums most of which topped at Billboard 200 before they went on a hiatus in 2011.

Following their pause, David collaborated with Geno Lenardo of Device on an industrial rock/metal project. He would later become the vocalist for Device band. However, Disturbed came together in 2015 and released their sixth studio album, Immortalized.

While most of the other band members will focus solely on the genre of music they profess, David Draiman is an exception. He draws inspirations from other genres as well. They include classic bands, seminal metal bands, hair metal bands, punk and new wave, among others. The musicians who influenced him the most are of Metallica, Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, and Rob Halford of Judas Priest.
