Rock music enthusiasts and fans of the rock band Pink Floyd have contended that the group might not have gone ahead to achieve such huge success in the 70s and 80s if they had not recruited the services of guitarist David Gilmour. The self-taught guitar player, who has been ranked by publications such as Rolling Stone and the Telegraph, as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, is also a decent vocalist, as seen in his solo work as well as in those with Pink Floyd.

For his achievements, Gilmour, as a member of Pink Floyd, has been inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as the UK Music Hall of Fame. He has further been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), among other honors.

Biography, Age

On the 6th of March, 1946, in Cambridge, England, Sylvia (nee Wilson), a teacher turned BBC film editor, and her husband, Douglas Gilmour, a zoology lecturer at the University of Cambridge, welcomed their son, David Jon Gilmour. From a very young age, Gilmour’s parents encouraged him to pursue a career in music despite their being educators. He was said to have fallen in love with music thanks to songs like “Heartbreak Hotel” by Elvis Presley and “Bye Bye Love” by the Everly Brothers. The latter, particularly, stirred him towards learning how to play the guitar which he taught himself how to do before the age of 10.

Getting into his teens, David Gilmour attended The Perse School on Hills Road, Cambridge. In 1962, Gilmour began studying modern languages at Cambridge Technical College. At around the same time, he joined the blues-rock band Jokers Wild, with whom he recorded an album and single that only fifty copies were published. By 1965, Gilmour had abandoned his education and begun holding street performances in France and Spain which helped him learn how to at least speak French fluently.

After taking a few jobs in France and failing to make it as a musician in the country, Gilmour returned to the UK in 1967. Upon his return, he was offered a chance to join the rock band Pink Floyd as a guitarist and co-lead vocalist, which he immediately agreed to. As a member of Pink Floyd, the group released successful albums such as The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall to become one of the best-selling and most acclaimed acts in music history.

But despite the successes of the group, David Gilmour felt underused and therefore launched a solo career in the late 70s while still serving as a member of the group. He went on to release four solo studio albums; David Gilmour, About Face, On an Island, and Rattle That Lock, before going on to work as a record producer and sound engineer for other artists like Paul McCartney, , , The Who, among many others.

Net Worth

In 2016, the Sunday Times, which is the largest-selling British national newspaper, reported that David Gilmour had an estimated net worth of £100 million. In 2018, the popular celebrity net worth website put that figure at around £125 million, signaling a significant increase in his earnings which could have either come from royalty payments from his many records or from the successes of his other thriving business ventures that include companies like David Gilmour Music Overseas Ltd and Intrepid Aviation, among others.

With such huge wealth, it is not hard to see why Gilmour has some extravagant hobbies that include collecting historical aircraft and owning a recording studio houseboat, among other mouthwatering properties.
