David Johnson’s Bio

The Cardinal’s running back was born David Jerome Johnson on December 16, 1991, in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. His father’s name is not known but his mother is Regina Johnson. He was part of a set of triplets alongside his two sisters, Darnecia and Danielle born in their family of six children. Seeking for a way to help lessen the burden of raising a handful of kids for his single mother, David took to organized sports, a course that would become their rope to freedom. First, it was dodgeball, tracks, and later, football, a game which seemingly comes naturally to him and one he has shown over the years to be a king in.

He attended Clinton High School in Clinton, Iowa where he shone in the tracks, football as well as in basketball. David set many records as a star athlete in his high school. His outstanding records include touchdowns in a season, career receptions, career receiving yards, career and single-season total offense and single-game record for touchdowns. He was also selected as 2009 Outstanding Offensive Player for Clinton High as a senior and was invited to play at the 2010 Shrine Bowl All-Star Game. Even with his high school career profile, David maintained a GPA of over 3.0 throughout his stay in school. Following an accomplished high school career, he committed to the University of Northern Iowa where he would play college football.

Throughout his collegiate career from 2010 to 2014, David Johnson held up his excellent form even though he was redshirted in 2010 and had to play his freshman season in 2011. Being accustomed to setting records, he did not hesitate in repeating the trend in college and would even do better post-college. David broke school records, including the career and single-season marks for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, rushing yards per game, career all-purpose yards and total touchdowns.

After a standout career in college, David Johnson was selected in the third round (86th overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He was the seventh running back drafted that year and the only player from his college to be drafted in 2015. The running back also became the second Northern Iowa player ever selected by the Cardinals, after Brandon Keith in 2008. He signed a four-year contract worth $2.9 million with the Cardinals in May 2015.

David Johnson made his career debut in a game against the New Orleans Saints in September 2015. After his first two games, the second being against Chicago bears, he became the first player in NFL history to score touchdowns by a run, pass and kick return in his first two games. The following season was a breakout season for him, he finished with 293 carries for 1,239 rushing yards with 16 rushing touchdowns. In addition, he was ranked seventh in the NFL for rushing yards, and ranked second in the NFL for rushing touchdowns as well as being named First-team All-Pro.
