David Ospina is a Colombian goalkeeper who plays professionally in the English Premier League for Arsenal F.C as well as for the Colombian national team. Having played for a good number of years, he has risen to be very important for both country and Club. Here is all there is to know about him.

Biography

He was born David Ospina Ramírez on 31 August 1988 in the Colombian municipality of Medellin. There is hardly any information on how he was brought up, except that he was raised alongside his younger sister, Daniela Ospina.

The keeper whose father is Hernan Ospina and whose mother is Lucía Ramírez began playing football at a very young age and this would go on to become his lifelong career path.

Club Football Career

He first began his club career for Atlético Nacional. He played with the club’s youth team until he gained a deserved promotion in 2005 to keep for the senior club. He would have the opportunity to play 97 games for the club before leaving for Nice in 2008. Before then, he had helped the club to win two Categoria Primera Apertura titles.

He played for the French side from then until 2014 when the English football club Arsenal came for his signature. Although the actual worth of his deal with Arsenal was not revealed, it was believed to be close to $4 million (£3 million).

By the end of the 2017/2018 season, Ospina had already recorded 70 games across all competitions. His most playing season was the 2014/2015 season when he made appearances in 23 games and the next was the 2017/2018 with 21 games. Nevertheless, he has won some trophies including the FA Community Shield and 2 FA Cup titles.

International Football Career

The first opportunity for the Arsenal goalie to appear in the Colombian national colors was in 2005 when he played for the country’s under-20 team. Even though his first assignment was at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship, he didn’t get to make an appearance until the 2007 South American U-20 Championship. This was the same year when his running with the youth team came to an end after 12 games.

David Ospina Immediately gained promotion to wear the national team jersey in the same year. Although the country is yet to win any trophy since he came onboard, he has set a good mark for himself after he became the country’s second youngest goalkeeper at the national level in 2010.

More so, he would go on to concede the least goals during the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification for which he played as the main keeper. At the World Cup proper, he helped the country to reach the quarter-finals in what would be their best performance in the competition. Thanks to his performance, he got to make the 2015 Ballon d’Or longlist.

By the time he was invited to play at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the goalkeeper had already played 85 games for the country.

Salary

Considering his contract with Arsenal in 2014, it is expected that he would be due to leave the club in 2019 or sign a new contract. Nevertheless, on the basis of the contract signed, he is receiving a salary of over $40,000 each week.

David Ospina’s Wife and Sister

As earlier indicated, David Ospina has a sister, Daniela Ospina. She was born on 22 September 1992 and like her elder brother, she is also into sports. Daniela plays Volleyball for Colombia.

On December 24, 2010, Daniela Ospina got married to another Colombian footballer, . But the marriage ended in a divorce in 2017 although the couple has a daughter between them.

The older Ospina on his part got married to Jessica Sterling in 2012 and they have two children together: a daughter named Dulce María and a son whose name is Maximiliano.

Height, Weight, and Measurements

The Colombian keeper has a very good height and weight for any goalkeeper and that is one of the things that have helped him to succeed. He has a height of 6 feet 0 inches (182.88 cm) and a body weight of 168 lbs (76 kg).

For his general body measurements, there is nothing about the Arsenal shot-stopper that is provided for in the public domain. That stated, Ospina who is expected to become his Club’s number one keeper after the 2018 World Cup is very fit and well built.
