The baseball star was born as David Taylor Price on 26th August 1985 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee in the United States. He was born to African-American parents Debbie Price and her husband Bonnie Price. David developed a keen interest in baseball right from a very young age and went on to become a standout player in the Backman High School baseball as well as basketball teams. During his high school days, Price won the Rutherford County Male Athlete of the Year three times consecutively. He was honored with the Rutherford MVP Pitcher Award in 2003 and 2004. The player ended his high school career with a total of 151 strikeouts and also participated in the All-American Game held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

For his impressive high school career, David Price was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers of the MLB. The young and talented pitcher, however, declined the offer. He chose to continue with his collegiate career and went on to enroll at Vanderbilt University where he played baseball for the school team. In his freshman year in 2005, Price earned Freshman All-American Team call-up while finishing the season with a record of 92 strikeouts in 19 games. The following year, the player notched 155 strikeouts. At the end of the season, David was selected to the All-American Third-team as well as All-South Region First-team and All-SEC Second-team for his wonderful performance.

In his junior year, David became the No 1 strikeout pitcher in the nation after setting a single-season record with a total of 194 strikeouts. The pitcher was honored with the Brooks Wallace Award, Dick Howser Trophy and he received college baseball’s top honor. At the end of the season, David had to forgo his senior year as he joined the professional league.

Professional Career

Turning pro in 2007, David Price signed up with the Tampa Bay Rays in the MLB. He penned down his rookie contract worth $11.25 million including a guaranteed sum of $5.6 million. Joining the team, the player was assigned to play for Vero Beach Devil Rays of the minor league before coming back to the major league. He made his first professional appearance for the Tampa Bay Rays in their game against the New York Yankees on the 14th of September 2008 and then went on to play for the team from 2008 to the middle of the 2014 regular season.

The pitcher was traded to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Willy Adames, Nick Franklin, and Drew Smyly. He had a total of 10 strikeouts in his first game for the Tigers and also led the league in innings, strikeouts, and batters faced at the end of the season. He made 271 strikeouts, faced 1,009 batters, and pitched 248 1/3 innings in the 2014 season. The following year, he got a one-year deal worth $19.75 million with the Tigers; he equally ended the season with an impressive record while being named to the All-Star team. Price was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in July 2015 in exchange for Jairo Labourt, and Matt Boyd.

At the completion of the 2015 season, Price left the Tigers and signed up with the Boston Red Sox in a seven-year contract worth $217 million. With his whopping contract deal, David became the third-highest paid baseball pitcher behind Zack Greinke and .

Price earns an annual salary of $30 million. He has completed two seasons with the Red Sox and entered his third in 2018.
