David Wright is an American-born professional baseball player who plays as third baseman for American Major League side New York Mets. He joined the Mets in the 2001 MLB draft and 3 years later, he marked his MLB debut on July 21, 2004. Wright received both the Gold Glove Award and the Silver Slugger Award for 2 consecutive seasons (2007 & 2008). David Allen Wright was born on December 20, 1982, in Norfolk, Virginia to Elisa and Rhon Wright. He was raised alongside 4 younger siblings. He was selected by the New York Mets in the supplemental round of the 2001 Major League Baseball draft. He spent the first 3 years with the Mets’ minor league teams before earning his major league call-up in July 2004.

On July 21, 2004, David Wright marked his MLB debut as a starting third baseman for the Mets against the Montreal Expos and he has remained a regular starting third baseman for the New York Mets ever since. On March 21, 2013, David Wright was named as the 4th team captain of the New York Mets. He became the longest-tenured player to have spent his entire career with one team

In 2004, David Wright’s first full season in the major league, he played in 69 games and batted .293 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs in 69 appearances. In 2005, he earned more playing time as he appeared in 160 games. He finished the season with a .306 batting average, 27 home runs, 102 RBIs, 99 runs scored and 17 stolen bases. He led the entire Mets team in all the numbers except in home runs where he finished 2nd place to Cliff Floyd’s 34.

Wright earned his first All-Star appearance at the 2006 MLB All-Star Game as the starting third baseman for the National League. He also set a new Mets record for the highest number of RBIs before the All-Star break having collected 74 RBIs before the break. The Mets clinched the National League East title and qualified for their first playoffs since 2000. In the 2007 season, Wright finished with a .325 batting average, 30 home runs, 107 RBI, and 34 stolen bases. He received the 2007 Rawlings Gold Glove Award as well as the Silver Slugger Award at third base. Wright also retained both awards in the 2008 season finishing with a .302 batting average with 33 home runs and 124 RBI.

David Wright’s 2009 season was marred by injuries which saw his performance drop drastically. However, he earned his 4th consecutive All-Star game appearance as a starting third baseman for the NL. He was also named in the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. In the 2011 season, Wright batted .254, 14 home runs, 61 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 102 games. However, he was not named in the 2011 All-Star game. On July 1, 2012, Wright was named as a back-up on the 2012 All-Star team, his 6th All-Star appearance. In July 2013, he was named in the 2013 MLB All-Star Game as starting third baseman for NL.

In the 2014 season, David Wright’s performance reduced to a career-low due to a shoulder injury and as a result, he did not make the 2014 All-Star Game. His injury woes persisted into the 2015 season, however, he helped the Mets to advance to the 2015 World Series. Since 2016, David Wright’s playing time has continued on a downward spiral as a result of injuries. Wright continues to hold the Mets record for nearly all stats; runs batted in (RBIs), doubles, total bases, runs scored, walks, sacrifice flies, times on base, extra-base hits, strikeouts, double plays, and hits.

In July 2016, David Wright and his wife welcomed their first child, a daughter named Olivia Shea. In May 2018, the couple welcomed their second daughter named Madison.
