It is practically impossible for one to talk about Deborah R. Nelson-Mathers without referring to Eminem, the phenomenal American rapper (Marshall Mathers III) regarded as the rap god in several quarters across the globe.

There are several factors which contributed to making Eminem the extremely famous and successful rap star he is. Beyond his witty and fine lyrical ability encrusted with amazing rhyming, the rapper is greatly admired for his energy and audacity to say things people normally shy away from. Disregarding those, Slim Shady’s reputation for trash talking those he has a score or two to settle with, in his songs, precedes him.

From former American Presidents like George W Bush and Bill Clinton to other super-stars like the late Michael Jackson and , Marshall has spared only a few from his lyrical lashings.Unfortunately, his ex-wife and his mum Deborah R. Nelson-Mathers can’t make a list of the few. In Eminem’s dissing of the two ladies, it was his disrespectful criticism of his mum that became a story of huge public interest.

As the rapper promised his mom in one of his songs – Cleanin’ Out My Closet (2002) – to make her “look so ridiculous”, he made it clear that he “would never diss [his] own momma just to get recognition”. Eminem went on in his 2009 Relapse album to blame Deborah for his drug problems in a song he titled My Mom. The song started with Marshall singing about his mom’s love for “Valium and lots of drugs”; proclaiming that he’s who he is because he’s like her. The Mom and son drama continued until the rapper released his eighth studio album – The Marshall Mathers LP 2 – in 2013. Eminem apologized to Deborah in one of the songs (Headlights). Acknowledging that he has disappointed his mom, he specified that he doesn’t hate her and asserted that he will always love her from afar.

There’s more to the relationship between Eminem and his mom but before we further plunder that story, let’s give a concise account of Deborah R. Nelson-Mathers’ life.

Deborah R. Nelson-Mathers Bio

She was born to Bob Nelson and Betty Hixson on the 6th of January 1955. It is said that the woman also known as  Debbie Mathers Briggs has been married to four different men and, that her latest husband is John Briggs.

Deborah isn’t the only child of her parents. Some of her known siblings include Ronnie Polkinghorn, Todd, Betty and Steven Nelson. If you dig into Debbie’s past, you are bound to uncover that her parents separated while she was still tender. You will equally find that she had a rough childhood and coped with a suicidal mother and an abusive stepfather.

Owing to the issues of her family, Debbie couldn’t get an advanced education. She was a 15-years-old high school student when she started a romantic affair with Marshall Bruce Mathers II. The Deborah and Bruce romance soon led to the birth of a son who would grow to become a celebrated hip-hop artist. But the union didn’t endure, Bruce left Deborah and Eminem who was only 18 months old.

Deborah has another son, Nathan Kane who’s fairly famous as a musician. Nathan was fathered by Fred J. Samara. It is well known to the public that Deborah is addicted to drugs, thanks to the clashings between her and her son.

Deborah’s Relationship With Eminem

Things were so bad between Deborah R. Nelson-Mathers and her rap star son at some point that she had to drag Eminem to court claiming that he has slandered her in his songs and interviews. For this, for $10 million in damages.

The defamation lawsuits Deborah brought against Eminem only fetched  for her.

Back in 2008, Debbie published a memoir she titled My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem. In the autobiography, she contended that Eminem’s songs aren’t a reflection of his life. According to her, the story of his life as told in his songs are lies made up to propel him to stardom. While Deborah related that she regrets allowing Eminem to say the things he said about her, without coming out earlier on to debunk the statements, she stressed that she is not enraged at him but only sued him to get assistance and put a stop to the foreclosure her house was facing.

At the moment, Deborah R. Nelson-Mathers and Marshall Mathers III still feel strange towards each other but they have developed a mutual respect for one another.
