Denis Shapovalov’s Bio

On the 15 of April 1999, Denis Shapovalov was born to Viktor and Tessa Shapovalov in Tel Aviv, Israel. Before Shapovalov turned one year old, his family moved from Tel Aviv to Ontario, Canada where was raised and he began playing tennis at the young age of five. His mother, Tessa Shapovalov, who played tennis professionally in Russia years before, had taken up a job as tennis coach at the Richmond Hill Country Club and took the opportunity to coach the young Shapovalov while there.

However, Shapovalov’s interest in the game grew to a point that his mother could not afford the time needed to coach him while also handling her responsibilities on the job, thus she quit and went on to start a tennis academy of her own called TessaTennis in Vaughan, Ontario.

This was where she was able to pay adequate attention to Denis Shapovaov’s training and development in the game while also catering to the training needs of other juniors. Tessa Shapovalov remains one of his two coaches to date, alongside Martin Laurendeau.

Denis Shapovalov did his secondary schooling at Stephen Lewis Secondary School in Vaughan, Ontario. Around the time he turned 13, it became clear to his parents that he needed more professional training than they could provide thus they hired Adriano Fuoriva, who was once the tennis development manager for Tennis Canada to assist with his training.

In the four years that Fuoriva coached Shapovalov, he won several junior ITF singles and doubles titles including the ITF G5 singles title in Burlington Ontario in 2013, and the ITF G5 singles title in Burlington Ontario in 2014. After qualifying for singles in the 2015 US Open, he reached the third round of the Grand Slam, and together with Felix Auger-Aliassime, he won the doubles title. That same year, Shapovalov and his fellow countrymen, Benjamin Sigouin and Felix Auger-Aliassime won Canada her first Davis Cup in history.

In 2016, he won his first G1 singles title in Roehampton. In a three-set win, he also captured the junior Grand Slam singles title in 2016, making him the third Canadian to achieve this feat. Shapovalov’s win-loss record as a junior is 86-32.

Denis Shapovalov’s second singles title win came in 2016 at the ITF 25k at Memphis and his third title was earned after he defeated Miomir Kecmanovic at Orange Park. After being awarded a wildcard for the Rogers Cup in 2016, he defeated with a three-set win in the first round, this represented his first tour-level win, though he lost to in the second round.

He earned his first ATP Challenger title in 2017 after defeating Ruben Bemelmans during the 75K in Drummondville. In August 2017, he defeated the-then world number 2 tennis player Rafael Nadal and a few other notable players during the Roger Cup. This led him to reach the ATP World Tour Masters seminal, a remarkable achievement as he became the youngest player to accomplish that in tennis history.

In the main draw of the US Open in 2017, he defeated several players to reach the fourth round, making him the youngest player to achieve that feat since 1989. He was defeated in the fourth round by Pablo Carreno Busta, world number 19 at the time. Shapovalov became an ATP top 30 player in 2018 after several wins during at the Madrid Open.

Parents

Shapovalov’s father, Viktor Shapovalov, is a Russian with Eastern Orthodox Christianity roots. His mother, Tessa Shapovalov is Jewish. She also played tennis at a professional level herself. She once part of the national tennis team in Russia. Tessa Shapovalov and her husband relocated to Tel Aviv, Israel from Russia around the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union. It was while in Israel that they had Denis’ older brother, Evgeniy before Denis came along.

Girlfriend

Denis Shapovalov is dating Penny Oleksiak who is a Canadian professional swimmer. She won four medals in the 2016 Summer Olympics, making her the first athlete to win four medals in a single Summer Games from Canada.

Oleksiak belongs to a family of athletes, her father had played football and basketball and her mother a professional swimmer. Her brother, Jamie Oleksiak is an NHL player, her sister Hayley, a rower while her other brother Jake Oleksiak played hockey in college.
