Deone Bucannon is an NFL player with the Arizona Cardinals. He was first drafted by the Cardinals in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft as a safety before he transitioned into a linebacker role. Before his NFL career, Bucannon played college football at Washington State. and earned a first-team All-American selection, as well as a First team All-Pac-12.

Deone Bucannon Bio

Bucannon’s full name is Deone Ariel Bucannon and he was born on August 30, 1992, in Oakland, California to Sonji and Duane Bucannon. Bucannon was raised in a military household, his father is a Marine Corps veteran, and his mother is a U.S. Navy nurse.

Growing up, Deone lived in different places due to the nature of his parents’ job; he spent sixth grade living with his father when his mom was deployed to Iraq. He said that was the hardest time in his entire life because they weren’t sure what was going on and was grateful when she returned safely.

Deone had lived in Oakland, Hawaii, San Diego, Southern California, and then Fairfield where he attended Vanden High School which was located just midway between Oakland and Sacramento, California. At Vanden High School, he played football and led the school team to second round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs.

As a junior, Bucannon recorded one hundred and forty (140) tackles, 3 sacks, 3 interceptions and 2 fumble recoveries, to earn the Solano County Athletic Conference Player of the Year award for the first time. He was also named All-CIF Sac-Joaquin Section and also won the City Defensive Player of the Year award.

As a senior, he had one hundred and seven tackles (which included 4 sacks), 2 interceptions, 2 fumble recoveries. He also caught twenty passes for 264 yards and one touchdown on offense and won his second-straight SCAC Defensive Player of the Year award. He was considered the 45th best safety prospect in his class and Rivals.com named him a 3-star recruit.

After high school, Deone Bucannon had several scholarship offers from different universities but choose to commit himself to Washington State University where he played college football from 2010 to 2013. He ended his college career with 384 tackles and fifteen interceptions. During his college career, he garnered a first-team All-American selection and a First team All-Pac-12 and was considered one of the top safety prospects for the 2014 NFL Draft.

NFL Career

He began playing in the NFL in 2014 after the Arizona Cardinals selected him as the 27th overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft and he signed a 4-year contract with the franchise to remain with them for the next four years.

The four-year contract was worth $7.7 million and included a $3.92 million as signing bonus and $6.23 million as guaranteed money. The contract also had a clause for a fifth-year option. Bucannon began his rookie season as a strong safety. His first career game was a season-opening game against the San Diego Chargers where he recorded five tackles. He finished his rookie season playing sixteen games and starting nine of them. His records that season was a total of eighty-three tackles, sixty-six solo tackles, 2 sacks, 2 pass deflections, and one forced fumbles.

Coach Bruce Arians intended to use Deone as a rotational or backup strong safety for the 2015 season but he changed his mind after linebacker Sean Weatherspoon sustained an injury at the training camp, he (coach) named Bucannon as Sean’s replacement.  Although he wasn’t a perfect fit for a linebacker, Deone Bucannon proved capable. He ended his second season appearing in all sixteen games and recording one hundred and twelve tackles, 3 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries, 3 forced fumbles, 3 passes defended, and one interception which was returned for a touchdown.

The following season (2016), he started thirteen games and recorded ninety-one tackles and 4 passes before being placed on reserve in December after sustaining an ankle injury. In 2017, the Cardinals picked up the fifth-year clause on Deone’s contract. Thus, Deone Bucannon remained with the franchise. In May 2018, he underwent an ankle surgery.

The linebacker is well-built and has the height that he could be mistaken for a basketball player seeing him for the first time. Deone stands at the height of 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) and weighs 102kg, that is 225 lb. His other body measurements are not known.
