Often compared to Oakland Raiders’ running back, Marshawn Lynch, Derrius Guice was named the most motivated player in college football during his days at LSU and was projected by several NFL analysts to be selected in the first or second-round pick, at the NFL Draft. When the pick finally came, it was not far from the projections as Guice was selected by the Washington Redskins as the 59th overall in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Derrius Guice’s Biography

Guice was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on the 21st day of June 1997 to Derek and Beulah Guice. His father was murdered in 2003 when Guice was just six years old. He had been involved in a fight at Denny’s Restaurant that ended in him been shot dead.

After seeing his father’s murder scene on the news, little Derrius Guice found it hard to deal with and thus had to channel all the outburst of emotions he was feeling around the game football and this is seen in his powerful style of running which is often described by the media as “running angry”.

He first began attending McKinley High School but would later get a scholarship to attend the predominantly white and affluent private school in the neighborhood called Catholic High, alongside three of his friends.

Guice and his friends would experience first-hand racism and bullying at the predominately white school, due to their color. He would recall pleading with his mom to transfer him back to his former but Beulah would not listen with anything that had to do with abandoning the scholarship he has been given.

Struggling to fit into his new-found environment, Derrius and his friends would meet Stephanie de la Houssaye, a white guidance counselor at the school who was drawn to the boys and could understand and relate to their situation, having grown up in poverty herself. After taking Guice home after a gang-related altercation at his house had left him unconscious, the youngster grew fonder of the counselor and often followed her home, had dinner with her family, go on vacation with them and eventually had to move in with them.

His high school football career began in his senior year when he rushed for 1,341 yards with twenty-one touchdowns. After high school, he played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and received the Pete Dawkins Trophy. Rivals.com rated him a 5-star recruit and ranked the 2nd best high school running back at the time after Damien Harris.

To fulfill a promise he made to his father before his murder, Derrius Guice committed to play college football for Louisiana State University (LSU). As a freshman Guice served as a backup to Leonard Fournette and ended his first season at LSU appearing in twelve games rushing for 436 yards on 51 carries and 3 touchdowns.

He also began his sophomore season continuing as Fournette’s backup but would soon play his first his first career game after Leonard became unavoidably absent at the team’s second game due to an injury. In that game, he ran for 155 yards on nineteen carries and one touchdown.

In a November game against Arkansas Razorbacks that season, Guice record a 252 yards rushing which became the 2nd highest in a single game in school history and in another game against Texas A&M two weeks later, he set another school single-game record by rushing for 285 yards. He became the 4th player in the history of Southeastern Conference (SEC) to record 3 career games of 250 or more rushing yards and was named to the Associated Press first-team All-SEC team.

Derrius Guice missed most of his junior season games due to a left leg injury. However, it was in that season he rushed for 276 yards in a game against Ole Miss and became the first player in the history of SEC to record 3 career games of at least 250 rushing yards.

Professional Career

After his junior season, the running back announced he was forgoing his senior season to enter for NFL Draft. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins as the 59th overall in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Unfortunately, his rookie season didn’t end well, he had an ACL tear injury in the first quarter of the first preseason game that ended his first season with the Redskins.

Is Derrius Guice Gay?

Guice’s sexuality became an issue of debate after the running back claimed that he was asked during an interview with a team at the NFL Combine if he liked men and if his mom “sells herself”. The NFL promised to investigate the claims and would later state that the claims were unfounded and there are no proofs it ever happened.

And now back to the question, is the running back gay? Well, there is no history of a woman or a man in his life and he hasn’t confirmed that yet and until he does, he will leave the question hanging.

Who Is His Brother?

Guice is not the only child his parents have, he has an older brother by the named Derrick, who has been in and out of jail. Derrick was arrested in 2016 for attempted murder and was booked at Parish Prison for a principal to 2 counts charge of aggravated criminal damage to property and 1 count charge of principal to attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and simple criminal damage to property.

He was later released on bond but was arrested in November of the same year on a different charge of resisting an officer, possession of marijuana, and possession of stolen firearm.
