It’s football season and all American football players have their hopes high on helping their team on to victory. DeSean Jackson is one player who has raised the hopes of his team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and also that of fans.

The pre-season game has shown him really proving his mettle and while this doesn’t really count for scores, it’s a positive ray of sunlight for the Buccaneers. The following are the thing to know about the wide receiver.

DeSean Jackson Bio

DeSean William Jackson was born on the 1st of December 1986 in California (Los Angeles to be precise) and raised in Crenshaw, Los Angeles. He went to Long Beach Polytechnic High School where he played football as a wide receiver. In his senior year, he led his team, The Jackrabbits to win the Championship of the CIF Southern Section. In all, he recorded 15 touchdowns in 1075 yards and 60 passes. At the United States All-American Bowl held in San Antonio, Jackson again proved his mettle by catching 7 passes in 145 rushing yards including a touchdown at 45 yards.

On completion of his stay in high school, he ranked top on the lists of likely recruits by colleges and earned the title of player of the year of Southern California as named by the Los Angeles Times in 2004 Glenn Davis Award. Tom Lemming of ESPN.com gave him a good rating as the fourth best wide receiver in the United States at the time. Other recommendations came from Calhisports.com which voted him as the Mr. Football State Player of the year 2004 and also PrepStar Magazine listed him as a member of the Dream Team Top 100 players and as an All-American. Jackson also played baseball and did track events.

After an initial indecision between the University of Southern California and the University of California, Berkeley, he accepted the offer from the latter. The California Golden Bears, the football team of the college received him with open arms and he stayed there for 3 years (2005 – 2007). His freshman year was highly successful with 2 touchdowns in his very first game and a total of 7 touchdowns and 38 receptions in 601 yards that season. The baseball team at Cal also required his winning touch but the Athlete decided to stick fully to football.

The American footballer had a better time in his sophomore year with 9 touchdowns and 1060 receiving yards. He also won several recognitions nationally including the Randy Moss Award as the nation’s top returner. By his junior year, he was being regarded as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy. Jackson broke the jinx of the Bears not winning since 1987 in Autzen Stadium by leading them to victory with 2 touchdowns and 11 passes. He, however, suffered some injuries and missed some games. When he violated some team rules, he was forced to miss more games in the 2007 Armed Forces Bowl first quarter.

When Jackson left Cal to enter the 2008 Draft, he already had Pac-10 returned punts record in both career (6) and a season (4). He also stood at 3rd place for receiving touchdowns (22) and receiving yards (2423). Several other accomplishments also trail his name from his college career days.

On the 26th of April 2008, DeSean William Jackson was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and he signed a four-year contract with the team in July. His preseason was good and he became the first rookie under Coach Andy Reid to start on opening day due to injuries of other wide receivers. The season ended for him with 50 punt returns, 62 receptions, 2 touchdowns and 912 receiving yards, each a record of its own. DeSean Jackson brought more fire on to the 2009 season and made several records. The most impressive was his being selected as both a kick returner and a starting wide receiver for the 2010 Pro Bowl which was the first time in history a player got selected for two positions.

An altercation with the team’s management on their seeming unwillingness to extend his contract got Jackson dragging his feet about practice but when he did come through, he still gave his best. He ended the 2010 season as the leading receiver and also in 2011. His 2011 season wasn’t so good as he displayed several acts of negligence. A five-year deal eventually came through for him in March 2012, it was worth $51million and his best was seen again. Unfortunately, the Eagles released him on March 28, 2014.

5 days later, the Washington Redskin scooped him up with a $24 million 3-year contract of which $16 million was guaranteed. He thrived and was regarded as one of the best players in the league. However, he suffered some injuries that made him miss out in games and had a career low of 528 yards in 2015 season.

On 9th of March 2017, he signed yet another contract, this time a $33.5 million 3-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His first touchdown for them came on 24th September in the game against the Minnesota Vikings. In general, his first year with Tampa Bay wasn’t splendid as he recorded career-lows of 13.4 and 47.7 in yards per reception and yards per games respectively.

The 2018 season, however, seems very hopeful for the footballer as he has shown good skills again in the preseason games. He has caught a total of 6 passes for 127 yards. This could mean that his speed training which he claimed to have done was really helpful. We can only hope he gets to lead the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl for the first time in 10 years.

His Family

Jackson’s parents are Gayle and Bill Jackson, they have been his biggest supporters. Unfortunately, his father passed away on the 14th of May 2009 following a battle against pancreatic cancer. Bill was reportedly a good man who devoted his time to his family, he was an active encourager of his children and was known to push them hard to achieve their dream. Two of his sons did achieve this dream of playing football on some sort of professional level.

DeSean Jackson has five siblings, two older and two younger brothers and a sister who’s equally older than him. His brothers are Byron, William, Desmond, and Derrick Jackson while his sister is A’Dreea Jackson. One of his brothers, the oldest, Byron was a wide receiver for San Jose State. He actually was on the practice squad of the Kansas City Chiefs for two seasons.

Wife or Girlfriend, Is DeSean Jackson Married?

The enchanting daredevil on the field isn’t married and has never been married. He seems really comfortable in his 3-year relationship with his girlfriend.

DeSean Jackson previously dated – a model, and Brooke Bailey, a TV host. Jackson and Chantel broke up in 2013 when he allegedly cheated on her with Brooke Bailey.

Social media sure has its uses, Jackson met his current girlfriend, Kayla Phillips, in 2014 on a social media platform. Kayla is a model and Instagram personality with about a million followers. She comes from a family of five made up of her sister Sarah, older brother Brandon, and parents, Michael Philips and Roselyn Philips.

Some months after they announced their relationship, they also told their fans that their first child was on the way. Jackson’s first son, DeSean Jackson Jr., was born on the 26th of October 2016. Kayla’s first son though is named Tru and she had him with her sweetheart from high school, OmynNewkirkk.

Kayla who is currently pregnant with Jackson’s second child is referred to as ‘the trap queen’ as she seems to ‘trap’ her boyfriends with a pregnancy, some sort of insurance game. This allegation was first meted out by her ex and baby daddy, Omyn when he learned of her first pregnancy for Jackson just a few months after they began dating. Well, Jackson seems happy and the relationship is still blazing towards happily ever after.
