Long before Deshaun Watson went pro with the Houston Texans, the Georgia native played in Gainesville High School and then Clemson University where he was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year in 2015 and ACC Athlete of the Year in 2016.

He was signed to the Houston Texans of the National Football League after he was selected in the 2017 NFL Draft. Born in Gainesville, Georgia on September 14, 1995, Derrick Deshaun Watson began to play football in 2010 when he enrolled at a local school, Gainesville High School.

Deshaun Watson’s NFL Career and Injury Stats

In his first year, he won the starting spot for the quarterback position and quickly set about to justify his selection. In his four years at the school, Watson brushed aside a plethora of school records and was a Junior All-American and 2014 Top 100 Recruit. Deshaun also led his team to a state championship title in his junior year and ended his high school career having posted 17,134 total yards, 218 total touchdowns, 13,077 career passing yards and many more impressive stats.

Watson joined his new teammates at Clemson University in January 2014 where he wore Steve Fuller’s retired No. 4 jersey. He was back up to starting quarterback Cole Stoudt. However, Deshaun outperformed Cole whenever given the opportunity. He eventually usurped him on the depth chart on September 21. This was quickly followed by a streak of unfortunate injuries. Starting the following month, Deshaun Watson suffered a number of injuries in quick succession, eventually going under the knife and missing his team’s Bowl appearance against Oklahoma.

Deshaun’s sophomore season was the perfect rebound for his college career. He led his team to an undefeated regular season record of 12-0. He also helped them qualify for and win their first ACC championship since 2011, while he became the ACC Championship Game MVP.

Watson continued his fine form in his junior season but soon sustained a shoulder injury on November 5, 2016. His immense importance to his team was highlighted when he clinched the Davey O’Brien Award for the second consecutive year in 2016. He also picked up the Manning Award for the second time and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The lethal quarterback put in a decisive showing that helped Clemson bag their second-ever national championship. This was the team’s victory against Alabama in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship, where Deshaun was again named MVP on the night.

This was his last year with Clemson as he declared for the 2017 NFL Draft on November 8, 2016, and left Clemson the following month with a degree in Communications. He was the 12th overall selection of the exercise and signed a $13.84 million deal spanning four years with the Houston Texans.

The Gainesville man made his first start for the team on his 22nd birthday, September 14, 2017. He went on to post excellent performances, tying and breaking many NFL rookie records along the way. However,  his rookie season came to an abrupt end after he tore his ACL in November. He ended the season with 1,699 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. Watson was always ranked No.50 on the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2018 list.
