Diego Reyes is a professional footballer from Mexico who plies his trade for one of the Big Three teams in the Portuguese league and in the country’s second-largest city, Porto.

Reyes, who can play both the center back and defensive midfield positions, was once considered to be the next big thing out of the southern-most North American country. He is still lauded today for his intelligent positioning and ability to maintain possession under pressure.

Read on to find out more about his origin, body measurements, and other facts.

Biography (Age)

Diego Reyes was born Diego Antonio Reyes Rosales to Eva and Rafael Reyes in Mexico City, Mexico, on the 19th of September, 1992. He joined the youth academy of Club America, a professional football club in his hometown of Mexico City, as a schoolboy where he was highly rated.

Reyes went on to make his debut for the club as a substitute for Angel Reyna in a league match against Santos Laguna in April 2010. He was just 17 years of age at the time. That season, Reyes got most of his playing time in the Clausura 2011 tournament, where he scored his first and second goals for the club.

That same year, Reyes was part of the Mexican under-20 team that finished third at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Prior to that, he had also featured for the under-17 national team at the CONCACAF championships in 2009.

From 2010 onwards, Reyes’ career went from height to height as he became a mainstay in Club America’s first eleven and was attracting attention from South American and European clubs. He certainly did his reputation no harm as he again represented his country, playing in every match at the 2012 Summer Olympics in which they won gold. Reyes was also notably the youngest squad member at the Olympics as he was 19 at the time.

In December 2012, Diego Reyes announced he would be joining Portuguese side FC Porto at the end of the 2012-13 season for a fee of 7 million Euros. Before crossing the Atlantic Ocean, however, he made sure to win the first league title of his career.

Reyes’ first season with Porto did not go as planned. He was relegated to the club’s reserve team although he made a handful of appearances for the main side that year. The following year was even worse as he made fewer appearances than he had done the previous year, prompting Porto to send him out on loan.

He played the 2015-16 season in Spain with Real Sociedad where he managed a total of 28 appearances, higher than his first two seasons in Europe combined. Reyes was again sent out on a season-long loan for the 2016-17 campaign. He joined Spanish side Espanyol who had the option of making the deal permanent. He again surpassed his tally for the previous season by making 35 appearances and scoring one goal for the club.

At the end of the campaign, Espanyol failed to make the deal permanent for which Reyes had to return to his parent club, Porto, for the 2017-18 season. This time around, his fortunes changed as he was put in contention for game time with the clubs first team.

National Career

Having represented his country constantly at various junior levels, Diego Reyes’ transition into the national senior team seemed inevitable. He made his full debut for El Tricolor in a 2014 World Cup qualification match against the United States on March 25, 2013.

He has since then gone ahead to represent his country in major tournaments such as the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and 2014 FIFA World Cup. Reyes has also had the privilege of captaining Mexico, however, in a friendly match against South Korea on 29 January 2014.

Is Diego Reyes Gay?

Diego Reyes’ preferred sexual orientation has not been disclosed by either the player himself or his representatives. It is unclear if he is indeed gay or not. However, Reyes shares the same name with a famous Spanish gay porn star, prompting his own name to be associated with that particular sexual preference.
