Penn was born on the 27th of April, 1983 as Donald Ward Penn, one of two children parented by Nancy and Donald Penn Sr. in Los Angeles, California where he was also raised.

As a child, Penn showed impressive athletic abilities and a desire to become either a pro basketball or football player. He attended Saint Bernard Catholic High School where he achieved letterman status in both sports.

In basketball, Penn was an All-State selection while in football, after making a second-team All-League selection as a junior, he went on to make the first-team All-League selection as well as first-team All-California Interscholastic Federation selection while also being named his team’s Lineman of the Year.

After graduating high school in 2001, he attended Utah State University where he majored in sociology. He also featured heavily for their football team which competed in the Mountain West Conference.

Penn started a school record-tying 44 games at both tackle positions and was noted to have never allowed a sack throughout his college career.

After graduating, Donald Penn was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent on the 5th of May, 2006.

His first year in the league was full of ups and downs as he was waived a few months later on the 2nd of September 2006 by the team but was however resigned to the practice squad the following day.

On October 4, 2006, Penn left Minnesota and signed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he worked hard to prove that he was built for the big leagues. In 2009, the Buccaneers rewarded him with a one-year $2.792 million contract to stay with the team.

After that contract expired, Donald Penn, who had now proven to be pivotal to his team’s success, signed a six-year $43 million contract. A few months after putting pen to paper, the Los Angeles native scored his first career touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers.

In 2014, after having spent eight years with Tampa, Penn was released by the team, leaving room for him to head back home to sign for the Oakland Raiders who as of the time of writing, he still plays for.
