Mehmet Cengiz Öz as a television personality has garnered substantial popularity and prominence since he started making guest appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004. Popularly known as Dr. Oz, the Turkish-American has made his name as a television personality and author. However, he also wears a few other hats; he is a cardiothoracic surgeon and a professor at Columbia University.

The doctor has also been on other popular live talk shows such as Larry King Live. In 2009, Dr. Oz collaborated with Sony Pictures and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions to launch his own daily tv show – The Dr. Oz Show. Mehmet’s popularity has also come with some backlash, mostly because of his leanings. His critics include and range from politicians, physicians, to reputable publications and even the British Medical Journal.

Mehmet Oz was born on June 11, 1960, in Cleveland, Ohio. For his high school education, he moved to Wilmington, Delaware, enrolling at Tower Hill School. He then graduated from Havard University in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Four years later, he graduated with an MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and an MBA from Penn’s Wharton School.

Since 2001, Dr. Mehmet has been with Columbia University’s Department of Surgery in the capacity of a professor. At the New York Presbyterian Hospital, he heads the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program. Fame came knocking when the doctor aligned himself with the queen of talk show,  debuting on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004. He went on to feature on the show for five seasons even having his own segment titled “Ask Dr. Oz”.

Following his time at the show, Dr. Oz debuted his own medical talk show The Dr. Oz Show on September 14, 2009. The show was released under the auspices of Sony Pictures Television and his friend ‘s Harpo Productions. As at January 2018, the daily show entered its 9th season. On the Show. Dr. Oz has tackled issues such as Type 2 diabetes, eating disorders, Alzheimer’s, obesity, anti-aging, family medicine, pet medical care, and a host of other medical concerns.

He has also had some popular guests on the show. On September 15, 2016, he had business magnate and then-Presidential candidate Donald Trump on the show to talk about his vision for America’s health.

Mehmet is also an accomplished author. Co-authoring with Michael F. Roizen, his You book series is made up of five books all of which are New York Times bestsellers. The series debuted with You: The Owner’s Manual with the fifth and latest installment You: Having a Baby published under Free Press in 2009. Mehmet also writes for Esquire Magazine where he has a regular column and also for O, The Oprah Magazine.

This bloke has received a plethora of recognition in terms of nominations and awards for his contributions to the healthcare industry. Amidst a myriad of Emmy Awards received since 2010, he also bagged a Freddy and Silver Telly Award, this was for his television series Transplant! His 2009 article “Retool, Reboot, and Rebuild” also saw the author cum medical enthusiast clinch a National Magazine Award for Personal Service.

In 2008, he gained a place on Time Magazine’s list of “100 Most Influential People”, coming in at the No.44. He was also named on Esquire’s “75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century”, 02138 magazine’s “Harvard 100 Most Influential Alumni”, and much more.

For all his good work, the doctor has also landed himself in hot water on certain sensitive issues. In 2011, he caused controversy when he questioned the dangers of arsenic in apple juice. He even hired an independent firm to do some research. However, the results of his research were condemned by the FDA and big consumer companies like Nestle.

On an episode of his talk show in 2012, he proposed reparative therapy for homosexuals and bisexuals. He received overwhelming backlash from mental health bodies and various national pro-LGBT groups.

Mehmet was born to Turkish immigrant parents. His father, Mustafa gained entry into the United States for his medical residency on a scholarship. Meanwhile, his mother Suna comes from a well-to-do family and also gave birth to two daughters, Seval and Nazlim.

In 1985, Dr. Oz got married to his wife, Lisa Lemole. Like her husband, she is an author, producer, and television personality. Lisa is a frequent co-anchor of The Dr. Oz Show on the Oprah and Friends XM radio telecasts. Together, the couple has four children. Their oldest child Daphne has also followed in her parent’s footsteps and is pursuing a career as a writer and television host.
