Eddie Alvarez’ Bio & Age
Edward Alvarez (widely known as Eddie or the Silent Assasin or the Underground King) is an American wrestler and mixed martial artist who was born on January 11, 1984, in Kensington, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents are Lilian Alvarez who is of Irish descent and Louis Alvarez who is Puerto Rican and was also a boxer. It is not a surprise that Eddie turned out to be a boxer as well as it runs in the family – His grandfather, Alberto Alvarez was also an amateur boxer and his younger brother, Albert Alvarez is also excelling in the sport.
When he began to show basic hints of interest in the sports at a very young age, his father, Louis guided him through the rudiments of boxing. However, it was his future wrestling coach at Northeast Catholic High School, Bill Hunter, who would help him unlock the potentials on his inside. Finding Eddie when he was just eleven years old, Hunter encouraged him to join a wrestling program he (Hunter) was involved in.
He would later meet Hunter again when he enrolled at Northeast Catholic High School and the former went on to nurture the young lad into the superstar we see today. In high school, he was not only involved in wrestling, but he also participated actively in football and track/field events even though his best efforts were reserved for wrestling. He played football for his high school varsity team as a running back – a position that suited his style.
In wrestling, he recorded 120 wins (a number his younger brother eclipsed with 129 wins) and a few losses in Northeast Catholic High before he graduated in 2001. Eddie Alvarez was named National Prep All-American wrestler twice, won the Catholic League Champion twice, was named All-Catholic three times, among other high school recognition and deserved accolades.
He opted to forgo college education in favor of professional fighting because at the time, his parents had left him and his siblings to fend for themselves in Kensington and moved to Florida. While seeking professional fighting berths, he mixed concrete to survive. On December 14, 2003, he got his first ever professional fight against Anthony Ladonna and it took him only one round to eliminate his first opponent in the MMA via KO.
Career
Eddie Alvarez’ fight against Anthony Ladonna at the Ring of Combat 5 was the beginning of a glittering career in wrestling which will see him win titles across three major promotions and also become the first fighter to do so. His next challenge was six months later against Chris Schlesinger at Reality Fighting 7. He won the fight in the first round via submission punches.
His KO victory against Derrick Noble at the MFC Welterweight Championship fight (later known as the BodogFIGHT Welterweight Championship) dubbed MFC: Russia vs. the USA which held on June 3, 2006, was his seventh victory in the ring. He won another match against Aaron Riley in a BodogFight: USA vs. Russia match on December 2, 2006, before recording his 1st career loss in a fight against Nick Thompson on April 14, 2007. He bounced back from that loss to record a win in his next fight on January 25, 2008, against Ross Ebañez.
He was signed by Japnese promotion DREAM to be part of a Grand Prix and he won matches against Andre Amade and Joachim Hansen, but got injured in the semifinals victory against Tatsuya Kawajiri and forfeited the final to his replacement, Joachim Hansen who went on to win it.
He joined the Bellator promotions and won against Greg Loughran, Eric Reynolds, and Toby Imada to become the first-ever Bellator lightweight champion. Some of his other victories in Bellator include those against Josh Neer, Roger Huerta, Pat Curran, Michael Chandler, Shinya Aoki, and Patricky Freire among others.
After joining the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2014, Eddie lost his first UFC match (the fourth of his career) against Donald Cerrone via unanimous decision. He also won fights against Gilbert Melendez and Anthony Pettis before facing lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos on July 7, 2016. He won the fight to become the UFC Lightweight Champion.
He first title defense was against UFC Featherweight champion on November 12, 2016. He lost the match in the second round via TKO and surrendered his title. He bounced back in a victory against Justin Gaethje in December 2017 – a fight that earned him the title of “Most Violent Man in the UFC.” In July 2018, he was defeated in the second round of a rematch against Dustin Poirier via TKO.
