Elizabeth Berkley’s Bio

The versatile actress was named Elizabeth Berkley Lauren when she was born in Farmington Hills, on the 28th of July 1972 to parents Fred Berkley (a lawyer) and Jere  Berkley (owner of a gift basket business). She was raised in the affluent suburbs of Oakland County, Michigan, with her older brother, Jason. For her high school studies, Elizabeth Berkely was first enrolled into a private school, Cranbrook Kingswood School, located in Bloomfield Hills before transferring to the North Farmington High School, from where she eventually graduated in the year 1990.

He passion for the arts kicked in quite early when she took a huge liking to dance. This prompted her parents to prepare the basement in their house for her to practice in whenever she wanted. When she was older, she wanted to see how far her passion for dance would take her so she traveled a lot to New York, where she would have the chance to train with seasoned choreographers and dancers.

In the course of her dance training which included ballet, she was able to get minor parts in musical productions requiring ballerinas in 1983. Still in her teens, she also modeled part-time for Elite while trying out for acting. Luckily for her, she landed her debut role in the 1987 television film Frog which later paved the way for more guest appearance roles on a good number of other television shows.

Breakthrough Role, Movies And More

Her most defining role came through in the year 1989 when she was just fifteen years of age in the television show, Saved By The Bell where she played the role of Jessie Spano. This role pushed her popularity far beyond her expectations and she played it for four years (1989-1993). After exiting the show, she set her sights on the silver screens got a role in the 1995 controversial movie Showgirls.

Unfortunately, due to the nude and hypersexual nature of the movie, it was criticized heavily and this caused her to be dropped by her agent. Notwithstanding, it is worthy of note that though the movie was a box office fail when it was released, the movie has since risen to number 36 on the list of Top 50 Cult Movies as compiled by Entertainment Weekly. In 2005, she appeared with actor and in David Rabe’s Broadway play, Hurlyburly. She would later star as a lead character in the movie, Lucky Christmas in the year 2011.

In September 2013, Elizabeth Berkley became a contestant on the celebrity dance show, “Dancing With The Stars.” She and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, came 6th overall after being eliminated in the 9th week. On the 4th of February 2015, she was hosted alongside other actors including; , Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Dennis Haskins and  for the Saved by the bell sketch on “The Tonight Show Starring .”
