Emmanuel Mudiay Biography

Emmanuel was born and named Emmanuel Kabeya Mudiay on the 5th day of March 1995 in Kinshasha, the Democratic Republic of Congo. His father Jean-Paul Mudiay died when he was still a toddler leaving his mum Therese Kabeya to carter for the needs of Emmanuel and his little brother – Stephane Mudiay with proceeds from her meager coffee and vegetable business.

The woes of the Mudiya’s was further compounded with the second Congo war which meant they lived under constant fear and insecurity for their lives and properties. Thus, the mum of two and her sons sought asylum in the US which they got. As they landed in America, they heaved a sigh of relief even as the Mudiya boys recall feeling like American’s the moment they landed.

In America, Emmanuel Mudiay continued schooling and when he came of high school age, he was enrolled at the Grace Preparatory Academy in Arlington, Texas where he started playing basketball and soon grew inseparable from the sport. He played at Grace Prep through his final year of high school before he transferred to Prime Prep Academy in Dallas, Texas to finish off. As expected, the Congolese kid had an excellent final season of high school basketball for which he was rated as the second-best recruit in his class by Rivals.com.

Emmanuel committed to play for SMU Mustangs men’s basketball team of the Southern Methodist University beginning in August 2013.

His Career Stats

In a rather fast turn of things, Kabeya decided to forego college in the summer of 2014 to rather play in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) following the footsteps of Brandon Jennings. In China, he began playing for Guangdong Southern Tigers in 2014 through 2015 in a one year contract worth $1.5 million.

Emmanuel’s stint with the club saw him play a total of 12 games; 10 regular season games and 2 playoffs from which he averaged 18.0 points with 6.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.6 steals per game.

Following the end of his contract with his Chinese club, Mudiya returned to America and was eligible for the 2015 NBA Draft where he was subsequently picked seventh overall by the Denver Nuggets.

On July 31, 2015, he committed pen to paper for a four-year contract worth over $14 million with the Denver Nuggets which was fully guaranteed. He earned over $3.5 million as his average salary while he was with the Denver, Colorado-based team.

For the three seasons Emmanuel Mudiay wore the Midnight blue, sunshine yellow, Flatirons red, and skyline blue Nuggets team colors, he played a total of 165 games of which he started 107 recording 73.9 minutes per game. He had a career-high field goal percentage of .401, a 3-point field goal percentage of .373, and free throw percentage of .808 all in the 2017/18 season. His Rebounds per game was best in his first Denver season at 3.9 with a 5.5 best Assists per game. His Steals per game was best at 1.0 with a Block per game of 0.5 and points per game of 12.8.

The New York Knicks acquired Emmanuel Mudiay in a three-team deal involving the Denver Nuggets and Dallas Mavericks. Since joining his new team, he has played 22 games, starting in 14. His points per game are at 8.8 with a .3 block per game, .9 steals per game, and 2.6 rebounds per game.

 

Height, Weight and Other Facts

1. Emmanuel Mudiay stands at a height of 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m) upon which he weighs a decent 200 lb (91 kg).

2. Following his drafting with the Denver Nuggets, he saw some playing time in the 2015 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas where his impressive performance earned him a listing in the All-NBA Summer League second team.

3. In his first professional regular season game, the lad recorded 17 points with 9 assists in his teams 105-85 win season opener against the Houston Rockets.

4. He started all 23 games in his first season with the Nuggets before he was put down by a sprained ankle injury which saw him off the court for 14 games at a stretch.
