This talented actress was born in the capital city of Boston, Massachusetts on July 27, 1984. She was named Taylor Jane Schilling by her parents; prosecutor Robert J. Schilling and MIT administrator Patricia Schilling (née Miller). She also has a younger brother called Sam. After her parents divorced, Taylor grew up spending time in two different neighborhoods, Wayland and West Roxbury.

She attended Wayland High School, Massachusetts where she was active in the middle school’s theater program. She also appeared in a stage production of Fiddler on the Roof before she graduated high school in 2002. From there, she traveled to New York City and attended the Lincoln Center’s Fordham University campus. Schilling continued to be a part of stage productions until she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2006. She got into New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts but left after the second year to pursue her career outright. During this time, she supported herself working for a Manhattan family as a nanny.

Her debut in the movie industry came as a supporting role in the 2007 independent film, Dark Matter. Her next role, in NBC’s medical drama Mercy in 2009, was that of the main character. Taylor Schilling starred as the war veteran and former military nurse turned medical practitioner Nurse Veronica Flanagan Callahan. The show’s creator, Liz Heldens, was so blown away by Schilling’s audition tape that she flew the actress to Los Angeles to audition for the part. The show ran for one season, and Schilling appeared for all 22 episodes.

She played Dagny Taggart in the 2011 science-fiction drama movie Atlas Shrugged: Part I and was cast alongside Zac Efron in 2012’s romantic drama film, The Lucky One. Her casting in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black is no doubt her most popular one to date. Cast as Piper Chapman, Schilling starred in the series’ main role for 90 episodes, receiving a credit only in the second episode of season 2. Orange Is the New Black aired for seven seasons.
