Fareed Zakaria Bio and Religion

January 20, 1964, was the day the CNN anchor was born as Fareed Rafiq Zakaria in Mumbai, India. His father was a politician, Rafiq Zakaria, while his mother, Fatima Zakaria was an editor for Sunday Times of India.

Fareed was raised in a Konkani Muslim family with a father who apart from being a politician, was also an Islamic theologian. Nonetheless, while he still considers himself a Muslim, he is not a practicing Muslim. In 2015, he revealed that it was up to a decade since he entered a mosque except as a tourist.

He got his early education in Mumbai from the Cathedral and John Connon School before going on in 1986 to obtain a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University. While at Yale, he was a member of the secret society Scroll and Key as well as the president of the debate society, Yale Political Union. Also, Zakaria was an editor of the University’s student publication, Yale Political Monthly.

In 1993, Fareed Zakaria got a Ph.D. in government from Harvard University. Even before then, he worked with the magazine Foreign Affairs as a managing editor; this was in 1992 when he was only 28.

He became a Newsweek International editor in 2000 and then in 2010, he was off to Time as a columnist and editor-at-large. More so, he writes for major publications including The Washington PostThe New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal while also working with Atlantic Media group as a contributing editor.

Career at CNN

In June 2008, Fareed began his program Fareed Zakaria GPS (Global Public Square) on CNN. Before then, he featured as a regular panelist on This Week with George Stephanopoulos on ABC Network from 2000 to 2007 and then he became the host of the PBS TV program, Foreign Exchange with Fareed Zakaria.

His program on CNN is aired weekly both in the U.S. and around the world, reaching well over 200 million homes. Fareed has interviewed many world leaders including former President , Russian President , French President Emmanuel Macron, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin, and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. More so, several CEOs and power brokers around the world have also appeared on the show.

Apart from his program, Fareed also hosts primetime specials for CNN Worldwide and he provides analysis of various public affairs and world events on CNN.com.

Through his career with CNN and other media organizations, Zakari has got a lot of recognition. He was named India Abroad Person of the Year 2008 after he became the first Indian to host his own show on CNN. Also, he won the Peabody Award in 2011 and in 2013, he was nominated for an Emmy Award.

He made his wealth from his various engagements including with CNN. Among the things he has acquired are a $3.4 million townhouse and a $2.1 million county estate in Rhinebeck, NY.

 

His Wife

When it comes to his personal life, Fareed Zakaria is a married man. He tied the knot with  in 1997. While there is not too much that is known about his wife, we know that she is a jewelry designer and writer.

The couple has three children between them, Sofia Zakaria, Lila Zakaria, and Omar Zakaria. Even though the CNN anchor is a Muslim, his wife is a Christian. More so, Paula Throckmorton and Zakaria did not raise their kids as Muslims.

In 2018, Paula filed for a divorce from her husband. That was not the first time the two would have a problem with their marriage as in 2011, they separated for some time before finally coming back.
