Many would know the television presenter as just a presenter, but Fergie Olver was much more than that. He was also an abuser who used his show in the early ’80s to sexually harass young women. The most worrisome aspect about his assaults was that they were perpetrated on television, and neither the show’s producer, directors, crew members or the audience complained or brought the issue to the appropriate authorities. We will discuss the details of his escapades in this piece, beginning with his bio.

Who Is Fergie Olver?

Fergie Olver was born in Moose Jaw, Canada, however, his date of birth is not known. The only other thing we know about his birth is that he was born by parents but their identities, occupations or information about other children born by them are not public knowledge.

His educational background is not known either as there are no records of a degree but he must have had one to become a popular presenter in the late 1960s. Prior to his broadcasting days, he played baseball in minor leagues as an outfielder before he moved to the big cities like Saskatoon, the largest city in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, and Medicine Hat, on the southeast of Alberta, where he participated in their semi pro-western leagues.

As an outfielder, he played as one of the defenders who secured the outfield and caught the balls that batted over on the field of play. At the bigger leagues, Fergie Olver became famous, particularly at the Western Major Baseball League and other major baseball leagues in Canada.

He moved over to media in 1960 when he began hosting game shows in the capital city of Canada, however, the name of the first broadcast station he worked with remains unknown. He worked at Regina for a while before taking his media skills to Montreal where he worked for CFCF-TV in 1969. In 1980, he transferred to the Toronto branch of the CFCF-TV.

He would later have his big breakthrough in broadcasting at Toronto when he become a sportscaster for the Blue Jay. It would interest you know that, Fergie was part of this team’s formative years and also witnessed its glory days including their World Series victory from 1992-1993. He worked as a Blue Jay crew member, sportscaster and also a dugout journalist for the CTV, TSN and BBS from 1981 through to 1996. Fergie Olver was passionate about the Blue Jays; he covered most of their games and he would often remark on his love for the Canadian baseball team.

Within this time, he created a kid’s game show alongside his now ex-wife, Catherine Swing. The show was titled Just Like Mom and was very popular in the ’80s. It basically featured mothers and their children and also questions and answers for the participants to determine how much the mums knew their children. Fergie’s daughter, Alison and Emily also appeared on this show.

Fergie Olver remarried after his divorce from his wife, Catherine, who doubled as his co-host on the Just Like Mom show in 1986. He is married to Susan Wheeler and together, they are parents of the popular television presenter of The Weather Network, Carrie Olver.

Sexual Assault and Scandal

No one suspected and no one saw it coming but a children’s game show which was supposed to be filled with entertainment and laughter turned out to be a ground for sexual abuse. No records show the exact time the abuse of innocent young kids began but it only came to the notice of many viewers and television critics, decades after the show stopped running that Fergie Olver did some disturbing things to little girls who appeared on the show.

As the show host, Olver would ask for a lip to lip kiss with the girls, mostly aged around 6-12 and would take the kiss even when the children clearly didn’t want it. We do not know if such acts were legal and permissible in the 80’s in Canada but morally, those were damnable acts that should not have been allowed, let alone on national television.

Recently, videos of clips of the show that showed Fergie kissing these girls became viral on the internet and many termed what Fergie Olver was doing as a trait of borderline pedophilia. There have been no comments on the case by any authorities, neither has there being any response to the accusations by either Fergie or his family, however, this has left a dent on the image of the television host.

Where Is He Now – What Happened To Him?

This is a question that has been asked severally by fans and foes of the one time Canadian broadcaster. Some are of the opinion that he is in jail, although there are no evidence and official statement to prove this. Since Fergie’s career ended in 1996, nothing has been heard about him and it is uncertain if he is still alive.
