Fred Couples was born in Seattle, Washington, on October 3, 1959. Thanks to his parent’s heritage, he is of mixed ethnicity; his father, Tom Couples (formerly Coppola) is Italian, and his mother, Violet Couples is of Croatian descent.

Fred and his two siblings, Tom Jr. and Cindy grew up on Beacon Hill, which happened to be close to the city’s Jefferson Park golf course.

And so, Fred’s love for the sport was born. It was at this park that Fred, who is also affectionately referred to as Boom Boom, developed his signature swing. It was initially a way to keep pace with the older kids.

Couples attended O’Dea High School in his hometown of Seattle. By the time he graduated in 1977, he had gotten pretty good at the sport and this earned him a golf scholarship to attend the University of Houston.

Here, he played for the Houston Cougar men’s golf team. While still in college, at the age of 19, Fred, still an amateur player at the time, defeated seasoned PGA Tour veteran, Don Bies in a playoff game, clinching the 1978 Washington Open.

It took three years after going pro for Couples to earn his first PGA Tour victory. This came in form of the 1983 Kemper Open. He scored a birdie in the playoffs to win the title after being tied for first with Scott Simpson and Chen Tzechung in regulation play.

This opened up the floodgates for the golfer as he went on to win fourteen more PGA tour titles.

His talent continued to earn him more accolades, including two PGA Tour Player of the Year titles in 1991 and 1992. In these years he also had the lowest scoring average, a record that also bagged him the Vardon trophy.

He is a five-time member of the United States Ryder Cup team, with his first naming in 1989, and the last in 1997.

The golfer also has another record of his name. In 1992, he became the first professional golfer from his country to climb to the number one spot in the Official World Golf Rankings. His red-hot start at the start of that PGA Tour kept him at the top spot for 16 straight weeks.
